What is this icon on my Sony Ericsson T610

Yesterday I noticed a small icon on the top left screen. It looks like
a 'B' followed by a '<' sign:

I searched the user guide but this icon was not listed. What could this
be? How do I turn it off? I tried by turning off the phone but it
reappears.

It indicates that bluetooth is turned on.

It certainly is. In my German edition it's on page 104 which is
the third page of "Symbols".

You have accidentally activated Bluetooth.

Key "More" -> "Turn off Bluetooth" -> Key "Select"

If You only see a "B", Bluetooth is on
If You see a "B<", Bluetooth is on *and visible to others*
