The quoted battery life for the Z300i Sony-Ericsson phone is 250 hours
standby or 5.5 hours talk. I am getting less than half these figures
despite taking precautiuons to minimise battery consumption. Is anyone
else getting significantly less than quoted battery life with
    Sony-Ericsson phones?

I am aware of the factors that cause battery consumption & I am in a
high signal strength area. I do not make many calls so I am effectively
measuring standby life, Simple arithmetic gives about 30 minutes of
talk time equivalent to 1 day of standby. I am not about to burn up 5
hours of talk time just to test the talk time life. Incidently, the
battery is a 900maH Li-Poly. My previous Nokia gave me close to the
manufacturer's claimed battery life so I think that Sony-Ericsson are
    grossly overstating the battery life.

My first K750i, wich has a claimed standby time of 400 hours, could hold
for appx. 330 hours with 70-80% signalstrengh.

You therefore got about 82% of the claimed life and I would be happy
with that. The 50% that I am getting is unacceptable.

50% is about what you get with all mobiles, Nokia included.

    I have a P910 that was eating batteries . 1 to 1.5 days on a charge.
turned off the display drive as a power saving (not just the backlight) and
turned off bluetooth. I get 12 days now on standby.

Dunno about the frequency of polling but I think every hour or 2 here in the
    uk.

the problem is Bluetooth, the bluetooth receiver has to remain on, and
    it is a battery killer.

If you are in an area with poor GSM or UMTS reception, the battery is also
drained more quickly, since there is a need for more negotiations between
the handset and the base. A general tip is to switch the 3G off if you don't
need the extra services that UMTS offers, they are probably unavailable or
unstable in that area anyway, but of course, if you do, there is not much
point in having a 3G handset. A 2.5G phone is generally much cheaper.

battery life is dependen on how much u use the phones unless the battery is defective for example i have a nokia n80 its suppose to have a 3hr battery life i get about 2hr or 2/12 hrs but i've been readin that if i keep using my web browser and music player im gonna have to get a new battery. my opinion

The phone is a plain vanilla GSM with no extras. It appears to me that
Sony-Ericsson are simply lying about the battery life.

Not necessarily. If it is a brand new phone we are discussing, the new
battery needs a "burn-in" period. The fist time(s) the battery is charged,
it will not reach its maximum capacity, this is due to the design of the
battery. The charging capacity will gradually increase for each recharge.
Secondly, if the manufacturer says 250 hours standby time, its a very
fictive figure, since it should be interpreted as "up to 250 hours" and that
is during absolute optimal conditions. It is very unlikely that you leave
the phone on and don't touch it for about 10 days. If talktime is 5.5 hours,
which is about 1/45 of 250 hours, the phone consumes 45 times more energy if
you make a call. So, if you make a call for 1min 20 sec, that means 1 hour
less standby time. If you use the phone while you move, the phone needs to
switch base now and then. It needs to negotiate with each base whenever it's
time to switch cell, and that consumes more energy than otherwise too.
Similar problem if you are in an area with poor reception, then the phone
needs to use more energy to transmit to the base, especially during a call,
but also in standby mode for the base negotiation.

I am aware of all of the above factors and have allowed 2 days standby
time per hour of talk time and I still get less than half of the
claimed battery life. Incidently, the batteries do not need a burn in
period according to the technical data on Li Poly batteries,
nevertheless it has now been through a number of charges with no
    increase in life.

I repeat my claim the Sony-Ericsson lie!

There is always a possibility that you have got a faulty battery. Just look
at what happened to all Sony batteries in various laptop computers recently.
Some kinde of production fault makes them explode if you are unlucky.

In which case I have had two successive faulty batteries - not
impossible as they might have come from the same batch.
