what a sensefull answer. And so pretty helpfull. You must be pretty
    proud of you.

I asume 3G referring to Triband - there are three different
frequencies in use for GSM handsets. IIRC these are 800 / 1800 / 1900
MHz (I feel like there was a 900MHz band too). Therefore you can use a
Triband handset almost everywhere in the world while a (i.E.) german
Dualband handset won't work in the USA as they mostly use 1900MHz.

my fault. 3G refers to Third Generation and therefore means
    UMTS-handsets.

These offer higher bandwidth and therefore the ability for
    video-conferencing, movie-download, high-speed-internet, ...

Due to the lack of UMTS networks there's currently no advantage in
    using one.

3G is the next generation of cellular mobile communication and, as such,
is in it's infancy as far as the consumer is concerned.

Some of the advantages are - potentially better sound quality, higher
data transfer rates allowing high-speed internet, Video calls etc and also
better security (encryption etc). There are, no doubt, benefits for network
operators also. Much of the potential of 3G is not yet in action.

At the moment, the few existing 3G networks seem to use GSM as a backup.
If you have a GSM only phone (or one of the other non-3G types) then you
only get to use GSM networks (or whatever the phone supports).

A 3G phone is, of course, one which can use 3G services on 3G networks.
Most of the ones I have heard are also GSM phones - they use GSM networks as
a backup in areas where no 3G service is available.

The potential advantages are that you get to use the 'new and improved'
3G services if you have a 3G phone. Depending on what is available in your
area, there might be some inital price benefits if you can get a good
    introductory offer.

Like I said, however, the whole 3G thing is still in early days and I
have seen complaints from users (poor battery life, poor handsets, poor
reception). Also, the new services come at a price. It would definitely be
worth talking to some people who have some experience if it is something you
    are considering trying.

    Waffle mode off,

    I have a 3G phone. It's the Motorola A830.
    DO NOT BUY ONE!!!!
Not now anyway.... Maybe in a year or two

The ONLY benefit is that the calls are cheaper. But, and that's a big BUT,
the phone's are dodgy. They obviously the first generation of 3G phones (how
ironic). They feel cheap. They are far too big. Mine lasts 14 hours. It has
bugs galore. 3G services is a sham at the moment, nothing worthwhile to
download. Calls drop out all the time. Calls don't sound any better. This
all goes for the other 3G phones as well from what I have read.

Oh, email was actually quite good, until it stopped working....
