From posts in this newsgroup I thought it would be good to upgrade from my
11 months-old firmware to the current version while still under guarantee. I
called CPW (supplier) and they said it can be done 'while you wait' at one
of their repair centres. Off I go to Oxford St, queue for 20 mins just to
get seen, then am told no, I have to leave it with them for 2 days, and
anyway it takes 2 hours to do so 'while you wait' is not possible. I am not
pleased.
Please, what is the truth here? Have people had CPW do this instantly, or
would I have to leave it with them? (If so, frankly it's probably not worth
the bother..) Or are there other quick options - I live N London.
Free is nice (hence going back to CPW) but I'll pay for instant service
somewhere else if necessary.

That's bullsh*t, the upgrade takes at most 20-30 min.

Hi, I had a problem recently at the Leeds CPW repair centre. I asked them to
upgrade it (in the afternoon) and left it with them a few hours only to pick
it up unupgraded. Went the next day in the morning and they did it there and
then although they said some BS about the engineer must have flashed it with
what they had on the PC and they were downloading the latest version...

If you aren't happy with CPW try another authorised SE service centre who
should be able to do it for you FOC if you show proof of date of purchase.

The actual flash procedure takes 5-10 minutes, But the procedure could
take longer if they have to download the newest software and have a
slow internet connection.

This is actually quite possible if they run it "offline" and forget to
check if there is a newer version on the EMMA server.

twenty minutes or so is about right, and it's not as though someone
has to stand over the phone watching the progress either. They
obviously don't want to do it as there's nothing in it for them the
'leave it for 2 days' is a not so subtle way of blowing you off.
go elsewhere and in the meantime, consider sending the same story to
SE (UK) so they have some idea of how their service centres are
treating their customers.

Well it had the first version of the f/w on it and the clock was still set
at what it had been when I reset the phone before taking it in so I'm pretty
certain they thought oh what a pretty phone and put it in the collections
box thinking I wouldn't know any difference.

If you're in North London, R's Electrics at 815 High Rd, Tottenham, N17 8ER,
phone 020
8808 1498 is an SE service centre who can do it free under warranty and
should be able to do it while you wait. I'd give them a ring and ask.
