So the P800/900 can do it as well as the 7650, it's just a matter of
over what distance.

So it seems. Pesonally, a working distance of only six feet would be fine in
the case of my tv and sofa. And most of my audio equipment.
I am always interested in what *else* phones can do - I use pcremote for my
t610 - via cable at the moment but have a bt adapter for my pc / laptop on
order as we speak. My laptop is often intergrated into part of my audio
set-up in my living room so I would be intrigued to control that via bt with
my phone.
The thing that appeals to me about using a mobile device with a colour
screen to control stuff is that you can better see what you're doing.
Options are on screen - as opposed to just button presses - so easier to
pick out (and yes, I am one of those people who would like of of those fancy
touch screen remotes - but I don't have the disposable income for such a
thing at the moment). And it's another useful application for something you
use every day anyway - i.e. your mobile phone. Multiple uses for one thing
can only be a step forward as far as I'm concerned.

As am I! Recent example:
Where we work, we have a buzz-in door system. You can open it with a
Yale-type key, or press the doorbell and wait for someone inside to
get up, press the door buzzer and then go and find out who they've
just let into the office. Most of the time, it's a current employee
who's forgotten their key.
I've created a system where I can Bluetooth my way into the building
using my T610 and a custom menu.
Practical? No.
Pointless? Probably.
Fun? Yes.
Sense of achievement? Definitely!
If that labels me an "ass clown" then fair enough. Bothered. It's
gonna take something more than some Australian twat stopping *my*
particular form of innovation!!
Yours,
Ass Clown
Actually, that's "Mister" Ass Clown to you.

Really ? Interesting. I've no idea how to go about doing such things (I
leave the practicalities to others as I'm nobody's programmer) but good on
yer, more power to your elbow.
How does it work then ? Is the lock system connected to something running
bt, like a pc or summat ?

Heh, quite. Sense of achievement in such possibly pointless (to others
anyway) pastimes cannot be underestimated.
I just told my ex husband about bluejacking - and he agreed that it was
childish, pointless, open to abuse but if you play nicely then- ok, but
undoubtedly appealing -- and he went straight to work and bluejacked his
workmates. They were all fascinated when he revealed himself and all wanted
to know how to do it. A warm fuzzy feeling of "we've discovered something
new today" abounded.
It's the "it can do that as well ? - Cool !" factor that I like.

dickhead
the OS's running on those phones allow direct access to the IR layer.
t610 does not.

That's nice - talking about yourself again?

Given that firmware usually becomes customisable at some point in it's life,
what's your point? No one ever asked if it had to be done directly via
Java.
I accept that at the moment you are 100% correct that it isn't possible on
the T610, but who knows what the future may bring.
Do you really need to be so abusive to posters on Usenet?
Also, could you please refrain from top-posting in future?

He probably has to be validated by such behaviour in order to feel
important, so - I'd give him up as a lost cause, mate.

I won't make a sweeping generalisation about top posting dumbasses, but it's
tempting.

It's all a bit sticky tape, cardboard boxes, smoke and mirrors at the
moment:
T610:
Outside :-)
Laptop:
Belkin Bluetooth USB dongle
Btcntrl v3.4.0 (http://www.meer-net.com/)
Custom menu item to fire off a URL to:
PC:
VB app listening on port 80
HTTP request sets certain lines high on parallel port
Parallel port connected to:
External relay box:
Transistor-coupled relays
One relay connected to:
Wire taped(!) to circuit board on phone entry system
"Experimental" is definitely the word!! ;-)

You are Heath Robinson and I claim my ten pounds.... ;-)
I've got stuff with wires taped to it all over the place - I think I keep
the insulating tape economy going single-handed.
My webcam is a nineteen year old Philips video camera and interface box with
cables with bare wires insulating taped to the relevent ports on the box
(basically because I haven't been able to find adapters anywhere) and then
connected to my usb tv device. It works so who cares if it looks like crap ?
