T39, infrared port and Windows XP

I am struggling to get Windows XP to provide an infrared port for my SE T39.
I downloaded the erit39.inf patch from the SE website but it didn't help.
My problem is that the computer does not automatically recognise the
infrared communication from the phone, and at the moment refuses to set up
an infrared port at all! Can you or anyone else help me with this? Is it
something simple I've missed? XP is comparatively new to me.

I don't know if it helps, but I had the same problem with XP and data
cable DCU-11. A friend of mine who finally managed the setup said the
problem was that XP wanted COM5 as port, not COM1 as usual.
