Possibly geeky V series question but it's eating me up

OK here goes. You select phonebook then press (say) the pqrs key. The
first press takes you to the start of the p's, the second to the q's.
You get a single beep acknowledgement each time. The third press you get
the r's. The fourth press, you stay at the r's and you get a 5 or 6 note
sound. Even though there are lots of entries beginning with s. If you
press pqrs again it moves to the s's. Anybody know wtf's happening?

Dave left a note on my windscreen which said:

Re: Possibly geeky V series question but it's eating me up

It does the same on mine, I think I found out why,
When I press P, it goes to the Q's,
Press it again it goes to the Q's (there are none, so it actually goes to
the beginning of the R's)
Press again, it supposed to go to R's but is already there so plays a little
tune and stays there.
Press again, it goes to the S's.

Another way of looking at it is that the button press ALWAYS tries to take
you to the start of the letter you press, P,Q,R,S even if there are no Q's,
it take you to where they would be (which happens to be the start of the
R's) the next press takes you to the R's (you are already there so it stays
and plays a notification type tune), then the next press takes you to the
S's.

Try it, ensure you have entries that begin with P, Q, R and S and you will
see it goes through as you expect, delete all or any entries beginning with
Q and you get the symptom/feature you mention.
