Sometimes (every third or fourth charge) my V500 says 'Unable to charge'
on the main (home) screen. If I try to charge it when switched off, it
will switch itself on to give me this unedifying message. The phone is
not, of course, already fully charged or totally discharged.

Other times it just won't start to charge, whether switched off or on,
and doesn't let me know why

Faulty, or another cleverly undocumented feature of the Vxxx series?

Latest update: it won't charge at all now - I get 'unable to charge' no
matter how often I turn it on and off.

Possibly a silly suggestion but have you tried 'wiggling' the power plug in
    the phone.

I had a T720i which did the same, and I had to wiggle the plug until it
    started charging.

Trouble is, it does not start charging immediately you get a good
connection, it takes a few seconds, so it is a case of wiggle and wait,
    wiggle and wait.

I also found the T720i, when suffering this, worked better if the flip was
    open when wiggling.

May not be anything to do with your problem, but if you have a phone which
wont charge it may be worth a try.

    Happy wiggling.

I've had the same problem with my v300. Had to have t-mobile replace
it for me. Hopefully the new one won't have htis problem :-\
