As you know, I am trying to find a cheap phone on Ebay for use during
my India trip. So dual means 900/1800 but 900/1800/1900 would be ok
too. Thanks to everyone so far. I think the trick is to search by
specific model numbers. If I just say nokia or dual band, I get swamped
by thousands of choices, most irrelevant to me.

Therefore, please recommend any specific models you happen to like
(light weight, good call quality and battery life, no bells and
whistles, even color screen is optional). If you can think of a really
clever Ebay search string, please let me know, I am very bad at that
sort of thing (pre-computer upbringing I guess)

Thanks to previous posts, I am already aware of a few models like
    Motorola V66, Sony T28/29/66, Nok 8210 .

The Motorola P280 (North America) or T280 (Europe/Asia) is a great phone.
As far as I know the models are identical. The phone is a 900/1800/1900
phone. It has GPRS and IrDA and a few games but few other frills. It,
however, has great RF characteristics, and really good sound quality.

Look also at slightly older models like the Ericsson R520M or the
Motorola TimePort 280 (available as carrier-branded P280 and unbranded
T280). They came before the era of cameras, color screens, and other
nonessential features. Both of these are available from dealers that
have older stock, and for excellent prices on eBay. Of course, just be
sure they are not carrier subsidy-locked (the European term is "SIM free")

The 280 has earned a well-deserved reputation as an excellent RF
and audio performer; I travelled to GSM-compatible Asia last year with a
T280i and it never let me down. On my recommendation, a friend bought an
R520M for her parents, who had to make an emergency trip to the Philippines
last winter, and used it with a prepaid local SIM. They said it worked
    out very well for them.

The Nokia 8310 would fit the bill. It's a very small/light handset,
dual-band 900/1800, lasts well over a week on one charge and has a
mono screen. Only problem is they're quite old and becoming
    increasing difficult to find.

An alternative would be the Nokia 6100 which does everything you want
but has a colour screen. Tri-band, one of the smallest/lightest since
the 8310 and a similar battery life.

To expand on that, I've seen R520Ms for sell for quite a bit under
$100 on eBay, so you aren't looking at a fortune.

how on earth do you manage those charge times?
i used to get about 3, maybe 4 days max on my 8310, and lucky to get 48
    hours
from my 6100. i've run my 6230 down in 12 hours, mind you that was using the
    video and mp3
    on loud speaker ;-)

If you can find one (they have just ceased production so are hard to find
new) the Nokia 6310i is hard to beat. 900/1800/1900 tri-band, 17 days
standby battery life, excellent call quality, bluetooth, GPRS...

Certainly true of some of the earlier firmware but the last one I had
was pretty solid for the six months or so I kept it.

Obviously depends how much talk vs standby time and the strength of
the signal but my typical use is perhaps between 15-30 minutes per day
of actual calls in city areas where the signal is strong.

I do little else with them except make and receive telephone calls.

My 8310 could last well over a week with little use but typically,
with a few calls per day, would be a little under a week between
    charges.

Difficult to tell with my 6100 as it's charged regularly in my car and
hardly ever drops below full charge but has managed five to six days
between charges with occasional use on international roaming and still
had perhaps a day worth of battery charge left.

That said, not of my phone have ever had video/mp3 and I rarely use
    loud speaker. ;-)
