I have a Motorola V60s. It is about 6 months old, with 43 hours total
usage. I got it new from Verizon. It has started giving me an "Unable to
    charge" message.

The phone is adult used and has not been dropped, abused, or anything else
that might damage it. It is still under warranty (got it thru Verizon's
    website).

When I turn the phone off, and then insert the phone-to-charger connector,
and then plug the charger into the wall socket, the phone turns itself on
(something I did not know it could do) and tells me that it is unable to
    charge.

About two weeks ago, this first happened intermittently. Now it is refusing
to charge at all. Initially I thought it might be the charger (Moto OEM,
came with the phone) - perhaps it wasn't seating properly? Reinsertion of
the charger phone connector a couple of times seemed to encourage it to
charge (inspection of the connectors pins, and their spring-like hooks looks
fine, no tarnish, no out of alignment - looks to me to be just the way it
was when it came out of the box). But now, reinsertion does not work at all
    to make it charge up.

The problem It does not appear to be battery related -- I have two Motorola
OEM batteries, both bought new - a slim (came with the phone) and a high
capacity (bought a month or two later). This "unable to charge" occurs no
matter what battery I try. Battery contacts and phone contacts appear clean.

Could this be a charger problem ?? -- since the phone "knows" the charger is
inserted, I tend to think not -- but then again, I do not really know what I
am dealing with here. Or is this a sign that the phone is toast? And what
do I do about this? Walk into a Verizon company store? Do they take weeks
to figure out the problem, or give loaners, or what?

    Suggestions are most welcome.

I'm on my 2nd V60, and my guess is that as the phone gets older, the
contacts shrink. Okay, I'm not (totally) serious, but I've found that
cleaning the contacts with a toothpick helps. I normally charge it in my
car, and sometimes I have to tilt the phone "just so" to make sure that
the contacts are aligned and the phone charges.

    Thanks Tom.

Just got back from the Verizon store. They thought it was contacts, too.
But after cleaning them, and trying the charger several times, they found
(with my help) that it repeatedly went to "unable to charge" even with their
contact cleaning efforts. Intermittent problem they said - and now they
could see it happen. This was, of course, music to my ears while I am
within the warranty period. So, they gave me a new Moto charger, and all
seems to be OK now - it is happily charging as I write this. Of course,
I'll have to see how it goes, but I am hoping that the new charger survives
longer than the original one. I will keep in mind your contact cleaning
    advice.

    Thanks again for your help.

I get the same problem with my relatively new V400. It is annoying but so
far, a little jiggling usually gets it to charge properly.

I work on cellphones, and let me tell you that motorola charge ports are a
pain. The typical problems are the charge ports breaking, actually breaking
loose from the circuit board inside the phone. I repair this problem every
day. It is typically caused by talking on the phone while its plugged into a
car charger, putting stress on the charge port, and eventually breaking it
    loose.

Of course, always keep the contacts clean. I see them everyday that are so
gummed up with krud I dont see how it ever charges.

    Just my 2 cents worth

Ah HA! I began to suspect as much after my third charger. I thought the
charger was going bad, but you're suggesting that it's *inside* the
phone. When I use the car charger, I often talk while it's still plugged
in, especially when the batt is down on the low side.

That would also explain why I seem to need to wiggle it just so and lay
the phone on it's side to keep the charge going. Wish I had known about
this a couple of years ago.

Interesting that it could be a problem in the phone itself. I thought
perhaps there might be a slight break in the wire where the charger plugs
into the phone such that if it is twisted in the wrong orientation an open
circuit results, but jiggling it in just the right way causes the connection
    to be complete.
I had similar problems with my old Nokia 5650 and the Fellowes desk/car
adapters that went with it. (I went through 3 of the adapters.)
I don't generally talk on the phone when it is plugged into the charger,
although I have done so a couple of times. And I don't have a hands-free
device for the car because I have been lead to believe that it works in the
same stupid way as the built-in speakerphone (i.e. the connection needs to
be established before the speakerphone kicks in).
The first time I had my charging problem, I sprayed a shot of contact
cleaner onto the phone. So I know mine isn't full of crud. Also, my USB
data cable seems to work OK but I'm pretty sure it does not charge the phone
despite the fact that there are contacts on the power connection end.

    Rich,

Thanks for the tip. As does Tom, I sometimes use the phone while it is
    charging in the car.

More stuff to be careful of.
