Using GSM phone as a "dial-up modem"

I have been trying to set up my Motorola V505 as a dial up modem. I
want the ability to dial into my home PC and the Internet, remotely,
while out and about with the notebook. So far I am not having much
success. I have MPT (v 2.21 and v3) and the ATT software. With this
I can send files back and forth and can even dial a call using the
phone tools. (I tried using the Internet set up, but it wants to set
up the unbelievably expensive, "prices that OPEC would envy", GPRS.)
When I dial using the "dial up session" that the XP wizard created,
the phone will accept the number (it displays on the screen...) but it
will not ring it (I also get the three tones that usually indicates a
bad number. (I have the number already in my contacts list and it
displays the name for it when the PC dials, so I know it is not a
typo.) After a few seconds, the V505 will drop out and then XP gives
me a message telling me that something didn't work correctly (but it
hasn't a clue either) I have even fooled around with the settings on
the dial properties (in the PC, not the phone...) but with no apparent
change. BTW, this all happens via a Kensington Bluetooth adapter.

There seems to be a piece of this puzzle missing and I have used up
all my technical expertise opening the box the phone came in…

If anyone has any ideas, please help. I need to find out if this
setup will work before my "30 day return" window of opportunity
expires.

Don't know about the 505, but on other V5 series, you can select between
GPRS and CSD for your ISP connection.

ATTWS does *not* support CSD (dialup), only GPRS (plus EDGE and UMTS).
Now that ATTWS is part of Cingular, you may be able to switch to a Cingular
plan that would give you the option of CSD. Or stick with ATTWS GPRS and get
the $25/mo "unlimited" package.
