I just got a v180 with a prepaid plan (in the us from t-mobile). The
seller told me it has to be unlocked to be used in Europe. Any
suggestion on how to get it unlocked? I have read I have to wait some
time to be able to do that. Is this true?

Not if you're going to Europe. T-Mobile will unlock it in that
situation. (Otherwise you'll have to wait until you finish your
    contract.)

    Call customer service.

I just called customer service. I told them I was going to use it in
Europe and that it doesn't make sense to buy a tri-band phone if you
can't use it overseas. They said I have to wait 90 days and there is no
way around this. Was the representative misinformed or does it make
    sense to you.

Do a search on the news or the net. I found a guy who do it locally
(montreal canada) with a kind of "black box" that he plug into the phone.
It worked well for 20$ CAN. You can probably find a shop or individual who
do it for you. Compare the prices as some charge as much as 75$ to do it.
It'supposed to exist some software but Idon't find any that work and you
    need a data cable.

It's the carrier's decision, so the rep was probably telling you the
    truth.
