Hi All: I just recently got a new service with cingular, (family talk
plan) What a rippoff. My first bill indicated internet download
charges. Truth is I haven't used this phone yet other than to turn it
on to see if it works. Am I getting some kind of bogus charges just
because I turn the phone on?

Cell phone companies are getting worse as far as business ethics go.

How much? One thing I noticed (and read in a review) on my v551 is
that it is pretty easy to accidently hit the internet button. 4kb goes
by before I can stop it. I'm more careful now. Still, that's 4 cents
per "use". But if you mean $10 or so, that would be part of the plan.

I don't think there is an automatic charge for internet. At least not
    on my cheapo plan.

I've got a Motorola V220 and Cingular service. I have never been
charged for any internet connect/download time unless I actually
    used it.

Verify your phone data logs: Main Menu -> Recent Calls ->
Data Times -> Recent or All Data Sessions -> Total Time.

How many other phones are on this family talk plan? Is it possible
someone is using internet to download?

Other phones have not been used. They are packed away as Chrismas
gifts. I was shocked when I got my Cingular bill. Extremely confusing
and way more than I thoght it would be.

I bought the V220 tools software but have not installed it yet. Will I
get billed for using that? I can see where this is going. My daughter
will undoubtedly use the internet and I will get a huge bill. I heard
that there is a way that I can block it.

Put a password on it that only you will know and then lock that feature.

Didn't you get a printout when you got the phones? About 4 pages?
With a listing of what you're paying for and how much your first bill
should be? It's usually pretty accurate, except for transient charges
(things you get charged for by usage).

You should also have gotten a page explaining how to read the bill.

If not, go back to the dealer, ask them to get up on POS (pronounced
'pahz') and print it out for you. (If they can't find it - it's the
middle column of the 'Contract' [rightmost] data on the last page when
they activated the phones. They can get to it from the initial menu
    by looking at completed activations.)

They should also have printed out your contract - the first column of
    contract data.

If it was an independent dealer, and they have their master dealer do
their activations, they can use my description to have their master
dealer print the stuff out and fax it to them for you.

Thanks Al I don't think they gave me all of that info. I will print
out your post and bring it to the Cingular people at the Mall.
    Happy Holidays

I know when I got my v220 they were giving a discount on the phone for
signing up for a media works package 7.99 a month that you could cancel at
any time even just a couple of days later that might be a possibility
    too
