Three weeks I messed with that until I found out what to do. You have
to have CSD ($3.99 or so a month)

If you have that already, and still get the beeps, here's all you
    have to do:

Add a + before the phone number you're dialing. That turns on "data
    mode"

    3 weeks! Argh!

This is only true if you are trying to dial up your own ISP. You can get to
the Internet using the phone and a GPRS data plan (MEdia Net on Cingular).
As stated you need to make sure your cellular service includes a data plan.
Then you need to configure for the proper login/password. For GPRS you
usually dial *99# to get to your cellular provider's Internet connection.

Note that not all cellular providers support CSD connections so you may not
be able to connect that way at all.

    Cheers

Very true. That's exactly what took me some weeks to figure out. I got
lots of great help connecting to Cingular's internet connection but
    that wasn't what I wanted.

I already have a dialup (at my server in the office) and wanted to use
    that.

That's all I had to do. Add a + to the phone number. Can you dial a
voice number? If so, you can get to the web. BTW, it's a Palm I'm

Nothing, it's my server. That's why I didn't want to use Cingular as a

I guess I am not getting it. I am using an MPX220 and try to connect my
Dell laptop to it as a modem (bluetooth or USB). I don't want to buy a
dataplan from Cingular, I just want to connect to my ISP. Anyone have any

Did I misunderstand you or did you say that you pay Cingular $3.99./month
    for CSD provisioning?

    SNIP

Cingular has to provision the account for CSD. I may not be explaining this
in a technically correct manner but I am sure someone will correct me if I
am wrong. Here is my understanding. CSD allows your cellular phone to act as
a modem. When you connect to the Cingular network (or other provider) they
have to create a CSD connection which connects to the modem of your ISP.
Without this CSD connection your phone will never respond to the carrier
signal from your ISP and eventually the phone connection will be dropped due
    to lack of carrier detect.

Not sure if this helps but bottom line is to do what you want to do you need
Cingular to setup your account for CSD.

    Cheers
