I was wondering if the Mobile Phone Tools is need to transfer MP3
files and pictures? Also is it needed if I want to backup my contact
information on my phone to my PC? Or can I just get the USB cable?

It doesn't have to be MPT but you'll need something. You can buy MPT
and a cable on ebay for around $10 though. Don't worry about the s/w
version. If it's 2.0 or higher it will upgrade itself tot he latest on
installation.
