    I have a V60i with AT&T/callplus prepaid service. In my house/yard I
get one bar and half the time the phone reads NO SERVICE. Even when a
call goes through, there are more dropouts (not loss of connection, just
loss of sound) than voice. 1/4 mile away (under the freeway, actually)
I get all the bars. The nearest AT&T tower, according to somebody's
tower map, is about 5 miles away. My Nokia 5160 (same service) was only
    a little better.

Is this sort of thing common? I rarely use the phone, just have it for
minor emergencies ("Running late, don't go without me"), but if the V60i
in general doesn't pull in signal as well as the Nokia I may switch
    back.

Is what common? Your not clear on what the actual question is. You mainly
mentioned that your getting bad reception at your home but better away from
your home, under an overpass. I cannot say if that is typical as I've never
been to your house. Want to invite me over for dinner?

That one phone gets better reception? Certainlly, and Nokia's are said to
one of the best phones when it comes to reception.

Sorry -- Do people normally get rotten reception with ATT/V60i 1/4 mile
away from a freeway when they get fine reception UNDER the freeway?
There's some sort of cell tower a few hundred yards away from the
freeway (not line-of-sight from under it) but I can't find a listing for
    it.

Alternate question: how far away can the tower be and still be useful?
When I can see a tower everything is fine, but I truly doubt that every
happy cell user is within sight of a tower.

2nd Alternate question: Are Motorolas generally regarded as more
    reception-challenged than other brands?

Sure, but you have to bring your own can opener, spoon and paper plate.
Be warned, I buy generic on sale.

Could be. The Motorola is small and I like the "voice" feature, but the
case is slippery and if the reception will generally suck I might as
well switch back to the Nokia. Besides, I have an orange faceplate for
    the Nokia!
