Having been a Cingular customer here in New York for the last 3 years, I
have decided to finally upgrade my and my wife's phones.
After my research, I have narrowed it down to Motorola's V551 or the RAZR.
Can someone please tell me their expereicnes in using these phones,
especially if you are in New York Metro area?
Also, I have been told that Cingular no longer LOCKS their phones.
However, when I asked at the local store here in NY, I was told that they
are sold LOCKED. My brother bought his V400's in Seattle and they were
UNLOCKED. Any ideas?
Thanks!

See my response to your identical (but, curiously, not cross-posted)
posting in the Cingular newsgroup.

Re: Any comments on Motorola V551or RAZR with Cingular?
I purchased 3 new phones, Dec 2004, from Cingular on a plan extension.
I am located in upstate NY. All 3 phones were unlocked. The Cingular
rep told me they sold their phones unlocked. One went to Europre twice
on different sim cards. Last week I bought a replacement for one of
the phones which was broken, paid full price, no plan etc. I was told
that all Cingular phones are now locked but if I called service and
told them I was leaving the country they would unlock it. I haven't
tried that yet.

But then she opens her mouth and you find she has talks like a barmaid
and has very bad teeth. Don't be taken in by outward appearances.
RAZR is reasonable, but has a couple very important disadvantages:
The screen is absolutely impossible to see in the slightest amount of
direct sunlight, and the earpiece volume adjustment is insufficient.
But apart from the fact that you cant see the screen or hear your
callers, it sure looks good

I haven't found the screen to be any worse than the v600 screen it replaced
and it's brighter and bigger in normal lighting. (It's bigger in bright
lighting too ) As for volume, if it's not sufficient one can increase it
dramatically by spending 5 minutes with MotoKit or PKTools. It's a simple
adjustment made by moving sliders with no complex SEEMS editing. I recently
converted my Cingular branded v3 to TMo branding and added video recording
and multi-character directory lookup. Sweet!

And it lacks EGPRS(EDGE).

Everyone I know that has a RAZR loves it.

I have the opposite problem with the speakerphone on the V551. The
increase in volume from the lowest step to the next step is too much. I
would like to lower the maximum speakerphone volume so that the steps
controlled by the volume switch were more usable.

Razr is not only the coolest looking phone, it's the best phone for
reception. I have used so many phones, no other phones get reception like
the Razr. As for the V551, you probably get more for your money with this
phone. If reception is the most important to you, go for the Razr.

the razr 2 will have everything that the v3 razr should have had. mp camera, edge, video, transflash, etc, etc

all of us that wanted the v1150 or RAZRv3X or whatever they are calling it this week, can hang it up. It won't be coming to the us in it's currect config since our syatems don't support it.

Small comfort to those that spent big bucks on the V3. Or will there be a
generous trade-in program? And a display that actually works in sunlight?

Have been using the Razr with T-Mobile (sorry, not Cingular) for a few weeks
now, and like it a lot. The positives are many, however there are a couple of
negatives that can be irksome if you've used other phones:
1. The screen is wonderful indoors but unreadable in bright sunlight.
I haven't tried polaroid sunglasses yet to see if this makes a
difference.
2. There doesn't seem to be a way to "ignore" an incoming call (i.e.
send directly to voice mail) when the phone is closed. You can mute
the ringer though and let the call forward after the usual number of
rings.
3. My phone seems to have a problem automatically re-registering with the
network after spending any time in an area without a signal. I'm not
too sure about this one and have posted a question in this forum
asking for comments and advice.
My experience with the sound and the feature array has been very good overall.
If you are used to the simplicity of a Nokia menu system (as I was), you may
find the Motorola menus a bit daunting, but ultimately it's not too difficult
to learn.
Hope this helps.
