I was hoping to charge my Razr V3 at the office through the USB port to
avoid having to buy a second charger. From what I've read in reviews, it
will indeed charge this way. However, when I connect it with a USB cable I
already had laying around, the battery meter on the phone's display doesn't
flash like it does when it's charging from the wall charger. The phone also
doesn't beep and flash a message that it's charging when I first connect it.
In other words, nothing seems to be happening.

Is it indeed chargng and just doesn't show it, or do I need some kind of
proprietary USB cable from Motorola? (Of course, I guess I could answer my
own question by draining the phone and leaving it connected to USB
overnight, then see if it has a charge in the morning.)

Using a generic 5 pin mini USB cable the phone will charge with the same
indications as when charging on a charger. Perhaps you have a bad cable
or a bad USB port. Note that USB splitters may not supply enough current
to charge the phone. Plug the cable into the PC directly if you haven't
    already.

I'm not sure what's going on. I've tried two cables on both my desktop and
laptop (both computers under a year old), and nothing happens. I'll keep
experimenting. Thanks. This is the Black Razr V3 if that makes any
difference, though I wouldn't think it would

IIRC, don't you need the drivers installed for the phone to charge?

I don't know if that's the problem but if so, where would I get the drivers?

I think I've found my own answer. After doing a little looking around on the
web, I found a site that said "in order for Windows users to charge with
USB, they'll have to buy the separate Mobile Phone Tools kit." So
apparently, there are drivers involved that I have to get from this
software. I'm guessing it would probably be about as cheap to buy another
wall charger as to buy this. I don't know if the company would want me
installing extra software on the office computer anyway.

FYI...I can charge my V3 on USB using the standard MPT, not the seperate one
you have to pay for. Using my laptop with XP home SP2.

The software can be found very cheap on ebay.
