I have a Motorola E398 (R372_G_OE.20.96R_A)

Last night I was entering a new phone number. While I was entering the
name I received a phone call. I answered the call as per normal.
The phone resumed to the idle screen (front screen). Now I cannot access
the phone book.
When I try enter the phone book either by the soft key or the menu, the
phone book screen shows for half a second then disappears.
The first number in the list is the number i was entering.. but it is
the number in the name spot.

My first thought was to do a master reset or clear. but I want to backup
my numbers. When connecting the phone to the PC using mobile phone
tools.. it says error reading phone book.

Can anyone shed some light on what has happened. I'd like to at least
get into the phone book and copy to sim.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
