I'm kind of new to this. Could someone tell me what unlocking the phone does? How can I install games and how do I know what games will work on my phone?

Unlocking your phone allows you to use your phone with SIM cards other than
your home provider. So... Let's say you go overseas on vacation and your
phone recognizes the frequencies used in the country you're visiting. With
an unlocked phone, you could get a pre-paid SIM in that country, with a
local number and avoid your home provider's ridiculously high roaming fees.

The few games that I've bought were sent to my phone directly from the
seller and billed to my monthly invoice. As for how to tell if a game will
work on your phone... It'll usually say in the game's description or on the
order form.

Unfortunately, "basic" unlocking doesn't unlock your WAP or GPRS.

What do you mean by that? WAP and GPRS aren't locked, only the phone. All
you need are the proper service and to enter the correct profiles.

Actually it is, in a manner of speaking. The settings are hidden with
most carriers eg. Rogers and Cingular. You have to do a "seem edit" to
have the settings appear. That's not included in the 'basic' unlocking.

Either that, or upload a pair of unbranded mma files (mma_ucp, mma_dcp) onto
your phone, which include the menu options you need, and avoid the whole
mess of editing seems in the first place.

I haven't actually tried it, but I think the proper settings can be set by
means of SMS.

Cingular.com - Customer Service - Phones&Devices
Motorola - V551 - Browser/Internet - Browser Settings
Leads you to a page that contains the WAP settings that I can see
on my Cingular-locked V551.
Are there others that I'm missing?
Hmmm. I see that the "baud rate" is set to 9600, while the max is 14400.
I wonder if that's why I consistently get lower data throughput than John
Navas does on his V551.

Yep. Works on my Cingular-locked V551 too.
>Are there others that I'm missing?
Nope. It's just easier to configure these things by SMS, as I suggested in my
earlier response.

Cingular supports CSD at only 9600 bps, not 14400 bps, and that has no effect
on GPRS or EGPRS(EDGE) speeds in any event.

OK so now I'm really showing my lack of knowledge, but what is WAP? I see GPRS come up on my phone sometimes, but I've never heard of WAP. I'm with Rogers if that makes any difference.

Google.com define:wap
Rogers, from what I gather reading this news group, exercises tighter
control over their locked phones than does Cingular.

With either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox this can be turned into a
"quick search" from the Location bar; i.e., just type "define WAP" and press
[Enter] to get the definition from Google.
For Internet Explorer, use Microsoft's free TweakUI PowerToy.
For Mozilla Firefox (which I use and recommend), right click in a Google
search box and then click "Add a keyword for this search..." to create the
Quick Search. Save it in the Quick Searches folder (within Bookmarks), and
then use Properties to change it to:
Name: Google Definition
Location: http://www.google.com/search?q=define:%s
Keyword: define
Description: Type "define <search terms>" in the location bar to perform a
Google definition search

Not....if only was THAT easy, which it is not. Remember, don't assume
unless you know for sure. I know for a fact that it's locked on Rogers.

No problem. Here is the answer. But, basically it's the ability to use
the Internet on the phone:
Short for the Wireless Application Protocol, a secure specification that
allows users to access information instantly via handheld wireless
devices such as mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smartphones and
communicators.

Are you SURE? I've never seen a case where the correct settings couldn't be
sent by SMS. The Sony Ericsson WAP Configurator
<http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=ps3&zone=ps>
does support Rogers.
