I've got a V710 that is a pain to charge. Right now the only way for me
to get the phone to charge is to plug the charger into the phone, open
the phone, and wrap the cord around the hinge so the connector is at an
angle and the connection is just right. The phone is more than a year
old so the warranty is expired.
I'm thinking if I take it to a moto service center they'll charge the
cost of a new phone to fix it. Anyone have insight what causes this and
if I could fix it on my own?

Have you tried a different charger? I've had the contacts on charger go
bad and changing chargers helped. That said, the connector is poor.

I have. A friend has a V710 as well and both his and my charger work
fine for his phone. I have the problem with his charger.

If it is out of warranty, Verizon will replace it for $50. Take it to a
service center. If they do not have any in stock, they can have it shipped
to you in 2 days. You can also send it to Motorola. They charge $75 for an
out of warranty problem. But they have waived the charge for something that
is a known problem, such as this charging issue.

Is that replacement done under the terms of the extended warranty or
the insurance that VZW offers? $50 is the same deductible as the
insurance, that's why I ask. The insurance must be added to the plan
at the time of phone purchace, and the extended warranty must be added
to the plan prior to the mfr. warranty expiring.

maybe the problem is with the charger cord? try a different charger.

Re: V710 Charging issue - any ideas?
This has nothing to do with the extended warranty. The extended warranty
covers damage, but also loss or theft. This is just their standard
replacement plan.

By "standard replacement plan" do you mean the isurance underwritten
by Asurion that VZW offers as an extra-cost option that needs to be
added at the time of phone purchase, and I suspect the OP did not opt
for? If so, stop reading. If not, continue.
Whose? Since when? If it was VZW's "standard replacement plan" my
brother wouldn't be having the issues he is with his wife's phone,
they would have just charged him $50, given him a new phone of the
same model and they'd have been on their way. Instead, he's been
through 3 phones now, with no resolution (2 were replaced under
"goodwill" out of warranty) and they've now offered a new phone, same
feature-level at 2-year price with no contract extension.
This $50 replacement plan with no monthly fee is not *****ed out in
any literature VZW publishes, otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell
the insurance and extended warranty. If this IS a standard,
no-extra-cost, VZW policy, there needs to be a class-action suit
filed, there are likely A LOT of people paying a monthly fee for
insurance they don't need.
Please verify on your bill that you don't have the TEC Asurion
insurance listed, or that your plan doesn't fall under some kind of
VIP program or other promo program that provides this service.
