I can't seem to get a WAV or MP3 file to playback on my phone.

I installed the mobile phone tools, connected my phone via USB and used
"Mobile Explorer" to copy some WAV ringtones to the phone. these
ringtones are straight from the motorola mobile tools CD. "riiing.wav"
for example. they play fine on the computer, but when I try to play
them back on the phone I get this message

"File has unidentifiable information. Delete ? "

Has anyone else had this problem ? I see all sorts of posters to this
newsgroup who claim to have successfully loaded MP3 and WAV ringtones
    to their V3 razr.

I also notice that none of the default ringtones that came preloaded on
my phone are actual bitstream files (i.e. wav or mp3), but rather they
    are midi files.

any help on this ? by the way, I bought the phone in the
philippines from one of those kiosk vendors that are so common in asia.
they didn't even give me a receipt and now I am regretting it. it
was cheap, only $200US for open line, supposedly brand new. I am using
it fine in singapore. the ringtone playback is the only problem I have
    had with it

I use the Goldwave (free) sound editor and save song excerpts as "MPEG Audio
Layer-3, 32000 Hz, 64 kbps, mono". I think the file must be a MONO mp3 to
    be transferred to your phone.

Re: V3 razr ringtone playback problems

thanks steve, I will look into that.

seems odd that the rrring.WAV file that comes off the motorola CD would
    not work.

also seems odd that the only ringtones I got pre-loaded on the phone
were all midi files rather than bitstream.

Has anyone gotten bitstream (mp3 or wav) ringtones preloaded on their
V3 ? or did it only come with midi-file ringtones ?

I've added lots of mp3 ringers. Usually I just make them myself using
    Mobile Phone Tools.

Glad it worked for you. GoldWave is awesome freeware. It's also one of the
best mp3 encoders when paired with the LAME file found on the same site. Do
what they say about the LAME dll file mentioned at GoldWave. You can rip
songs from your CD's (cda format) and store them on your computer as mp3's
(Tool>CD Reader). I usually save them as 160 bitrate.

You can open mp3's in GoldWave, trim off of the beginning and end or
anything what you don't want - like intro drum beats, etc and then save the
finished product as your ringtone. I usually shoot for 30 seconds or so
then taper the volume on the last 2 seconds using Effect>Volume>Fade.

However... I did make one a minute long a few days ago of Shakira's Spanish
version of Whenever, Wherever (Suerte). It's a blast making your own.
Some more ideas: Mustang Sally (Clapton), Stayin' Alive (The Bee Gees) or
ANY disco song for that matter! Haha! Remember Rubberband Man? I'll bet
you can't get that ringtone anywhere!

Re: V3 razr ringtone playback problems

Yeah, I downloaded a bunch of TV themes from the IRC and made ringtones
    out of them

    "James Bond Theme"
    "I Dream of Jeannie"
"Mr. Ed" ...Hello, I'm Mr. Ed
"Fat Albert" ...Hey hey hey, its faaaaaaaaaaat Albert
    "Get Smart"
    "Seinfeld"

Too bad they only put 5MB of memory in there. seems that they could
easily cram 500MB if they wanted to.
