Not really extended, but higher.
The SNN5696B battery furnished with the V3 is labelled with a capacity of
710 mAH.
The V3c ships with a new battery, the SNN5777A, which is labelled as 740
mAH.
Not a big difference, but if I were in the market for a second battery I'd
wait until the 5777 hits the supply channel.

Whereby I've had problems with two of those batteries. They were ok for
about 3 months, then both mine and the one I bought for my wife just died,
suddenly and completely.

are aftermarket batteries ok? I was told by a verizon rep that they can damage my phone if they're not OEM quality

I've never had an aftermarket battery damage my phone (I went through 5 or 6
non-OEM batteries with my old Sony phone, and have had 1 for my V3) but the
batteries themselves may be of lower quality. The previous batteries for my
Sony never lasted as long as the original (in terms of number of hours of
life, plus overall life-span) and the replacement one I got for my V3 died
completely after 3 months as I said above, but I've never had any
phone-damage from any of them.

Same issue here... Worked great, then it died.

Some of the non-OEM batteries offer substantially more power (longer
standby/talk times)
