Does Mot make phones that can browse net via my home wifi router?

This admittedly is a basic question and yet it's not clear if a
wifi-enabled cell phone means I have to pay for use of wifi or connect
over carrier network.

Can I just do basic wifi connectivity through my home router / cable
internet if I get a mot (or other) wifi-enabled phone?

(A separate discussion is how useful browsing or reading email is over
a tiny screen, but for a quick occasional hit, I'm thinking it would be
useful.)

That depends. If the box of your phone says anythink like "UMA WIFI",
then you will most likely only be able to use the WIFI part of the phone
to connect to your carrier's network through your router. The idea is to
provide indoor access at places with no traditional GSM base stations in
range.

If your phone is more of the PDA type (running Windows mobile like HTC
devices), you may be able to browse the internet through your router.
