New phone stays powered off and not used - consequences?

Hello all.

I plan on renewing my contract early next year, and getting a new phone
(Motorola V325i) under the NE2 program. Since my current phone (Nokia
3589i) works fine, I want to keep using it until it dies. So right
after I get the new phone, I'll go on the Verizon Wireless website and
de-activate the V325i, and then activate the 3589i.

My question is if I end up using the 3589i for a long period of time -
(several months, a year, etc.) and if the V325i remains powered off and
not used, what will happen to the battery in the V325i? Will battery
life be shortened or will there be any other consequences?

Thanks.

- Dave

I would recharge the phone every month or two.

Alternatively, charge it once, then store the phone with the battery
removed from the handset. When you're ready to use it, charge it again
before use. The li-on battery should be ok to store charged for a year
or two without ill effect.

No, you don't want to do that. It does nothing but eat up charging
cycles. The consensus from my cursory search indicates the battery
should be stored at half charge or less, in a cool place. I'd suggest
removing it from the phone, also.

Check out the Battery University at:

Pretty comprehensive battery information including storage and long
term capacity charts.

Cadex has its own self-interest, and that material is not as accurate
and informative as materials on battery manufacturer websites; e.g.,

Looks like my best bet is to charge the battery to half charge or less
(40%), then store it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Thanks to all who responded with useful information!

From what I have seen, the information on the Cadex site seems to
pretty closely follow other general information I've run into. I
can't speak for any of the battery Manufacturer's sites, but I have
found that OEM data tends to present absolute best case scenerios (ie:
automotive gas mileage figures).

Cadex products are chargers, testers, etc. I think I'd trust their
data over OEM reports on THEIR OWN products.

Cadex has a self-interest in promoting its own products, which is
clearly reflected in the material on the "Battery University" (more
properly called, Charger University). Cases in point are the nonsense
about "memory" in and slow charging of NiMH cells.

My $0.02 worth.

I've visited many sites and aint green behind the ears. There may be bias
but there generally is with most manufacturers' sites: they want to sell
their own product and know how to subtly influence us.

I use slower charging where possible and the charge seems to last longer,
whether 'phone battery, NiMH or others. My two penn'orth, that's what
"discussion" is about.

Regards.

Re: New phone stays powered off and not used - consequences?

I guess I'm confused - why renew the contract in the first place if you
aren't ready to upgrade the phone? My ne2 was up in July but I still have
plenty of life in my LG VX6000 so I didn't do anything. Now, after one too
many drops the phone is beginning to show its wear, so I'm ready to upgrade.
According to my verizonwireless.com account I have several options,
including some that I didn't have 6 months ago.

Am I missing something, or is getting a phone today and not using it sort of
premature? I'd imagine in July of 07 they will offer better deals on better
phones than they are right now.

Charge it to 40% of capacity then keep the battery in the fridge until
you need it
