    Thanks John, that did just what I wanted. Now I need a codec (whatever that
    is) to enable Vista's Movie Maker to read a 3GP file that came from my
    Motorola V551 cell phone.

    Try importing the clips into Movie Maker...
    it can do the tasks you described.

    3GP is just a variant of MPEG-4.

    AVIcodec and Gspot are free utilities that will tell you what codecs are
    needed and where to get them.
