It was because AT&T Wireless (which was a spinoff of the old AT&T) was
bought by Cingular which was jointly owned by SBC and Bell South, SBC
merged(bought) the old AT&T and changed their name, then merged with Bell
South, they wholly owned Cingular. So to market under one name, they
changed Cingular's name to AT&T. Now after that I suggest some Advil.
As long as they phone works, and they don't pull any fast one's, I don't
care what they call themselves. Do I think Cingular was a more catchy name,
yes. Do I understand their reasoning, yes.
The only real reason I could see them not changing the Cingular name is if
they owned international mobile services. Which they sold off a few years
back. And even those where just Bermuda and some Caribbian mobile carriers.
Why they did that, is your guess. I think it was a big mistake.
