    Hi,

Is there an FAQ to this group?. Might someone be so kind as to point
    me there?

I have compiled the latest version of gsmlib (on a freshly installed
Debian 3.0) but whenever I try to access my cell phone (Motorola L7398
or T-250) via the serial cable it switches itself off.

Using the Windows software (Smart Cellect) I can send/receive SMS and
do whatever else I like. I can even talk AT commands to it through the
Windows Modem it installed. But if I try to talk straight AT to the
COM/ttySx port, the phone switches itself off each time.

Any pointers to documentation would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    LK

Mine does this too! OTOH the cable wasa gift from a friend. I think there
are some electronics in the Motorola dongle on the end (D9 to Mini Din is
    just wire).

Not from what I have heard. I did some more research into this
    problem.

Apparently, the older model TimePorts (i.e. before the T-280) require
a virtual device drvier under Windows to use the built-in modem via a
    serial cable.

It is therefore not possible to use the modem with a serial cable
under any other OS (BSD, Linux, Mac.).

Unless of course, your use IrDA.

The Windows software you need (I got mine for approximately 10$ on
eBay) is Motorola's SmartCellect 2000. It comes with the device driver
for Windows 9x/2K, Palm OS, and even WinCE I think.

    Hope this helps.
