Ditto. Echoes my experience with being suckered into a Radio Shack/Sprint
phone deal.
Was told about the 14-day no obligation trial--cancel within that period,
and owe nothing more than the $39 setup charge.
Got the phone home, found out it didn't have any service. Also found out on
major interstates there were dead zones every 2 miles. Returned the phone
and Sprint's story changed. Now they wanted over $70 from me--the first
month's ENTIRE bill, for a few trial day's use.
Sprint CSRs are liars. They've got a scam running and I filed a complaint
with the AG over that little caper 2 years ago.
I tried Verizon next, and found the phone was in roam mode at my house.
Then Cingular... no service at the house...
Then finally Nextel. Good strong signal at the house and 100% reliable on
the interstate highway.
During the blackout, our local cell site lost power and didn't come back for
four days. I wrote a letter to Nextel's CEO. I got a response within a week
from their freq coordinator and a full explanation of why the site was down
(air conditioner stopped, while the batteries kept the cell running--but the
August heat caused an autotune combiner to melt down and a new one had to be
shipped the following Monday).
Few companies are honest when the rubber hits the pavement, but I was
delighted at the friendly and courteous response I got from the Nextel
technical people.
No company is perfect, but at Nextel, I don't see an overtly-corrupt
attitude. They make an effort to get things right, and 99.9% of the time, my
service is excellent. I use my i90c a lot, and lately, I can't recall any
incident where a call dropped or signal wasn't good enough for a solid
connection.
AVOID Sprint, above all cellular companies. I have a feeling they haven't
changed their tune since April 2002.
