Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?

not to mention how many people do you know on Verizon PTT? most likely none!

Nextel has the market....even though others will try to get in...

Sounds like the return of the Vealots-half-truths and misinformation here.
I have not have any major problems w/nextel where they have coverage and
am not changing providers.
Have nextel for past year with NO COMPLAINTS- two years ago I would have not
even considered them.

nextel phone service is excellent, voice quality is better than ATTWS or
VZW - My VZW phone constantly went to analog and dropped calls, ATTWS
charged me .69 roaming + .25 ld. ATTWS C/S was horrible, and TDMA voice
quality stank.(never had their GSM-had Omnipoint [T-Mobile] GSM and that
voice quality was great). Nextel has no roaming and .20/min or free LD and
phone voice quality is excellent.

It all depends what works for you and where you live. I got nextel a year
ago and have not looked back.
travelling to NJ, Del, upstate NY, Central Florida, Pocono PA (just to name
a few)- all with absolutely NO PROBLEMS- in addition to where I live - Long
Island NY - Have been to areas when there is no coverage- to be fair.

It is untrue and a misstatement to say nextel is a "wallkie talkie w/a phone
glued on" (such BS-you forget the stupid theory that plumbers and
electricians prefer nextel, more vealot propaganda), I would say it is
excellent phone service with the added feature of a nationwide walkie
talkie, if that interests you. Every nextel phone has D/C, not just one
phone, like VZW.

Of course, this is IMHO and my $0.02 and your experiences, opinions and
mileage will definetly vary.

Ya, both sprint and verizon don't have a lot of ptt users. They should
just try to share. When it becomes possible

Some time ago, I really would have liked to have PTT--the reason;
cheap M2M rates-However, till this date, the closest nextel coverage
in my rural area is 35 miles; so I know almost no one who has nextel,
but I know a lot of folks who have verizon & sprint, and you're right,
none of us have ptt--but we have the cheap M2M--which was the only
thing, in my opinion, that Nextel has, now or then.(you never hear
anyone say I want that cell service that "don't work".)

From what I read, both verizon and sprint have "rigged" up a somewhat
less than perfect, but functional PTT, which customers can add, if
they find it necessary, and can still retain cell service which works
pretty well anywhere in the entire country (my most important
requirement).

It's all just competition, which makes it all better---probably the
reason we have cheap M2M is the other carriers were trying to do
something to compete with nextel's PTT--so we have all gained--and the
rates for all these carriers per minute is cheaper now than ever, with
far better coverage---

Sounds like I need to pick up a nextel phone just to thank'em for
pushing my carriers rates lower. Hum. It's just great to have so
many to pick from.

Three weeks ago. Cell service was brutal, PTT was fair.

VZW is the other way around. Great cellular, crappy PTT.

(Not that I'd know about the PTT from personal experience, but I trust those

That depends entirely on where you are. In some places Nextel
actually has almost as good coverage as Verizon. In most places,
though, there's no comparison - Nextel phones have no coverage in
areas where Verizon phones have great coverage.

If Nextel has solid coverage everywhere you'll be, go with Nextel.

You evidently don't spend much time on the North Shore in mid-Suffolk.
Nextel coverage there ranges from none to non-existent. Most of Rocky
point is a dead zone.

Nextel isn't a phone carrier - at all. Not licensed as one, and
doesn't pretend to be one. It's a two-way radio system that provides
a PSTN link.

Most of CR's reports are "controlled" - by what they get for
publishing them. I take their reports as a starting point, but if I
had to choose based on one single criterion, theirs would be the last
one I'd use.

Which matters how? I'm not likely to try to reach my plumber on PTT,
but if I have my company on PTT, whether Nextel or Verizon, all the
people I want to reach are on the same carrier I am.

Not that I think Verizon has a clue when it comes to PTT, either with
the implementation or the plan structure.

Unfortunately, no. I *wish* I could add PTT to my AC family plan for
a reasonable price, but I'd have to pay twice what I'm paying now to
get PTT - $59 for two phones vs. $59 for each phone. And that's for a
poor PTT implementation.

That's just about the only reason to pay the extra that VZW charges.
And the reason I'm staying with them.

It certainly *does* "pretend to be one." Their ads give the impression that
they are another cellular provider. In fact, I've *never* seen one of their
ads that gave even a *hint* that they are "a two-way radio system that
provides a PSTN link."

Get real.
