Thanks for the link Isaiah. They have the projected dates starting on pg.
13. I see where they are going to go after the 800 MHz band as well.

As SPCS customers, it doesn't like it's going to affect us at all, unless we
want to update to newer phones which will include IDEN in the hardware ...

I wouldn't. iDEN never has been very good in terms of capacity or sound
quality. And the amount of RFI iDEN handsets put out is astoundingly high.

The only thing sprint is getting out of the merger is nextel's customer
base. Nextel's network is outdated and to be disbanded.

Hopefully with the increased customer base, sprint will start filling all the
holes in their network. In the meantime, expect more system overloads.

Yes, but Nextel also has bandwidth, and more tower locations to expand
coverage for both entities.

That will only happen if all the Nextel customers go out this week and buy
SPCS phones, which they won't. I'd suggest you read the PDF file that
provides a bit on information on this deal.

And you weren't likely to buy a different phone in 18-24 months, anyway?

Sprint is also getting a larger sales channel (Nextel and Sprint stores)
and lots and lots of tower sites. But you are right about the network;
iDEN needs to go.

I would disagree. Sprint is not immediately migrating everyone. In
fact it looks like they're waiting until the EV-DO rollout to consider a
migration. And considering that Nextel has some 1900MHz spectrum coming
to it, it's likely that Sprint will be able to bring about the extra
bandwidth needed to handle the influx if and when it happens.

this is actually incorrect, the IDEN network will continue to be used for the PTT function of the phones. only the phone portion will move to the higher frequency. IDEN will be around for quite a while longer

1) Sprint is sold in Radio Shack. The number of Nextel stores,
compared to RS stores, is probably somewhat less than minuscule.

2) What you say applies only to company owned stores. Independents
don't have to carry Sprint to carry Nextel.

Sprint is also sold at Best Buy, CompUSA, and a number of other retail chains
that don't sell Nextel postpaid (although they may sell Boost).
