Trying to Cancel Nextel Early

Has anyone ported their number to another carrier and just told Nextel to
stick it for their $200. penalty BS?

I've been with them for 2 1/2 years and only have until January to fulfill
my obligation. I'm getting so tired of dropped calls and poor connections
that I"m ready to port my number to Verizon.

I'm wondering if they won't release that number until I've paid the penalty
and if that's their way of holding me back from moving?

Anyone try this??

all you have to do is go to verizon and they will port your number, you dont have to tell nextel anything. the problem is this though they are going to bill you the term fee, but think of it this way think of it as a really expensive months bill and your done with them, also no more bills from them, also go to verizon ask them if there is something they could do for you considering you are going to be paying a termination fee, i think yhey probably could work something out for you

Re: Trying to Cancel Nextel Early

Your account won't be canceled until the number is ported to Verizon.
Nextel will then assess the $200 fee to your account. If it is not paid,
they continue to send you bills then write your account off and turn you
over to a collection agency. Word of caution, cellular providers do not
look favorably upon customers whose accounts have been written off by other
carriers. It most likely will lead to requiring service deposits and
Account Spending Limits, not to mention the hit on your credit report.

In short, you agreed to the terms, and in your own words have an obligation.
Be a man, take responsibility for your
obligations and actions, and pay up.

Re: Trying to Cancel Nextel Early

What I am currently doing is establishing a pattern of poor service, making
sure that I register the problems on their website. This will ad the
documention I need to basically tell them to stick it.

As for being a man and taking responsibility, your a little off base. I've
given them three years of service. Because I simply changed my plan to one
that gave them more money each month they demanded that I extend a year. If
I cancel three months early, having given them 33 months, and I'll be going
to Sprint, they can pretty much stick the fine if they push it. Collection
agencies are a joke anyway, my wife works for one, just a bunch of druggies
and alcoholics trying to make a living.

Just a bunch of druggies and alcoholics, including your wife? -- I don't
mean to be rude, I'm just curious about your wording.

Anyway, you're correct that they're mostly a joke, until you need good
credit (like at another carrier, or for a loan -- Or worse, if you have
a liability that has a clause that increases the interest in you default
on anything)

Re: Trying to Cancel Nextel Early

If you are going to Sprint, problem solved. Sprint and Nextel merged on
August 12th. You shouldn't have to pay an early term fee as you are staying
with the same company, Sprint Nextel.

Sorry to hear about your wife's drug and alcohol problems.

A buddy of mine didn't pay and now he is being asked to pay a $500
deposit fee. Its not worth ruining your credit over $200, imho.

Also, when I looked into Verizon they told me that I better make sure
that Nextel didn't have my number locked with a password. I called
Nextel and sure enough, they had to unlock my number. They told me
that they locked it for my protection.
