upgrading a phone

Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my phone and had a few questions and I was
hoping someone can clear up some questions.

Pretty much what I have heard from people I know that upgrade their
phones is they pay an arm and a leg.
If they get the new phone through Nextel they pay full price. Plus an
activation fee and overpriced shipping and I think there where another
fee. With a total of about $100 over the cost of the phone.

Or they get it off Ebay or someplace else for about $50 over the phone
and shipping.

However, if I look at the Nextel site they say they will rebate you
$150 if you sign up and waive fees if you do it while you are still
under contract and sign for an extension. If you do it online they will
reduce other fees. Signs I don't hear people talk about this option was
wondering the truth about it.

Currently I have about 10 months to go and would like to upgrade to the
870 and want to know the best way to go about this.

Thank you,

tc

I just came onto Nextel from Verizon. Verizon was sending to many of my
calls to voice mail. Signed up on their web site. I got two i560s for
$150 (his & hers). Free shipping, Free activation. Your problem may be
that your contract still has 10 months to go on it. Wait until your
contract is up, then deal with them. I bet you will get a much better deal.

If you can't wait, try some other vendors. I found a pretty good deal
at Amazon.com of all places. I would have gotten the phones cheaper from
Amazon but I would have had to pay activation on two phones. The savings
evaporated. Had I bought only one phone, or two plans for over $39.99
each instead of the shared minutes plan I choose, I would have come out
ahead.

If your SIM card is compatible, then I think that to upgrade a phone,
all you do is to pay for the phone and swap the SIM card. On my two
i560s I can switch which phone is on what number just by exchanging the
SIM cards.

Re: upgrading a phone

If you are doing an upgrade, there is no activation fee.

Be careful with Ebay, you may be getting a phone that was reported to Nextel
as lost or stolen, which they then place into a database and the phone or
SIM will not be activated or swapped until the person who reported it
contacts Nextel to tell them the unit is found and clear. This may not seem
like an issue with the handsets, after all, all you have to do is switch out
the sim card. But to use the MMS, you have to have the MSN (handset's
serial number) activated on the same service with the SIM.

As for the deal on the web site, if it is there it is true. A $150 rebate
will lock you into a 2 year contract extension and I believe waive the
upgrade fee... Probably your best route...
