I guess I was just traumatized at an early age by a Nextel experience. I
had the service way back in 99/00 and it sucked like nothing else on earth.
The whole iDEN thing delivered performance on a par with "two tin cans and a
piece of string." I didn't like being in a "full up" signal area and
dropping calls like hot potatos. The idea of buying up "special mobile
radio" licenses from mom and pop operators and trying to thread together
minimal bandwidth across the country left me cold. I don't like the fact
that Nextel does not support "true" SMS. They have the same lame
implementation that Sprint uses - WEB access. There are still far too many
coverage holes with Nextel to support my requirements. But you're right,
live and let live. What I really want is coast-to-coast, robust GSM
coverage - like the rest of the world. Here is what blows about VZW -
phones designed for 17 year olds. I will admit that the Nextel phones are
designed much better, but the GSM phones have the right balance of utility
and glitz. The MOT V60i is a good "business" phone that has some heft and
substance to it (now that I finally have one that works, having swapped out
four of them in less than a year). The VZW slant towards games and ring
tones clearly points to a different target market than Nextel. Nextel has
"productivity" applications. VZW has a "corporate" service segment and has
finally got on the WiFi bandwagon. All in all, it is coverage, coverage and
more coverage when it comes to wireless service. VZW just works in more
places with more digital coverage than any of the other major (or minor)
carriers. I will give Nextel (and to some degree Sprint) points for a
homogeneous, consistent, seamless network (the phones work the same
everywhere), but the coverage is just not there yet, and in the places they
have coverage, the supported bandwidth is too thin. Nextel's long term
strategy is to migrate towards CDMA (or maybe GSM), but in the meantime,
they will milk iDEN for as long as possible. The Direct Connect thing has
its appeal, but only for a certain segment of the market (a "Blue Collar"
oriented market). They have effectively exploited this niche and
undoubtedly will remain the PTT leader even if/when competition enters the
frey. Their coast-to-coast implementation of PTT will change the dynamics
and may give Nextel an edge going in to the future. Ok, time for my meds.

Re: (OT) Nextel
Great reply, Karen. You sound like you know your "stuff". Nextel has
improved greatly over the past year or so. So far, I'm happy with the
service after one week. I'll let you know as time goes by.

Re: (OT) Nextel
I use a very scientific term for Nextels, "Really Bad." Or maybe
"Really really bad...."
They fail to work more than they work, why would you want a phone you
cannot take anywhere and rely on?

Re: (OT) Nextel
As far I know, my Nextel works where all others don't, such as inside most
big warehouses or store. Cingular, At&t, Sprint all had less reception and
more drop calls than my nextel so far. The coverage to me is great. At least
in Florida is. IMO

Re: (OT) Nextel
Other way around for me. Here in Chicago, Verizon works MUCH better than
Nextel. Forget about trying to call a Nextel subscriber during peak hours
and Verizon also works better indoors. I tried Nextel on two seperate
occasions because I really wanted it, but it just couldn't beat my Verizon
service.

I like the idea of Nextel (although the DC beep is a bit obnoxious) but
unfortunately, when my brother was visiting his wife had to call on our
landline cause his Nextel couldn't get service. Here is what I have observed
at our house (rural Eastern Shore MD):
Verizon - excellent signal/call strength even at my b-i-l's house which is
*really* rural (with Kyocera 2235 and LG VX4400)
Cingular - halfway reasonable signal/call strength (Ericsson 1228d)
Sprint - acceptable but not great signal/call strength - some calls dropping
(my brother's old service) (Motorola StarTac)
T-Mobile - no signal/not able to make a call in my house...half to go about
a half mile to get coverage and then drops calls quite a bit still (Samsung
N105)
Nextel - no coverage (Motorola i90 ??)
Haven't been able to test AT&T yet but have a friend who has them and will
when she visits. For what it's worth. Completely satisfied with Verizon
where I currently live/travel.

Re: (OT) Nextel
Now the point of this is service AT YOUR HOUSE? Good info but for anyone
not living at your house the info means nothing for the rest of us who
dont live there. Dont think it doesn't matter as your service indoors
at a house that you live in is important, but its hardy info that any of
us can make opinions about wireless providers with as even a neighbor or
someone down the street may have great service from any of the named
providers.
Now Kevin maybe FOR YOU Nextel has problems, but for some reason you
seem to be talking plural... now now dont go too vealot on us. You do
want to matter dont you? Ask some of the girls monkeyvealotboy, or
joe*****mama, or ****yuk about writing BS so that they dont matter
anymore....... Seriously for you SINGULAR they might be a problem but
seems some peopl really like the service and it seems to work well for
them

It's why I wrote "For what it's worth." Don't know how many people have had
the opportunity to compare multiple services. I clearly wrote these
observations were based on service at my house and where my house is
located. When I was living in a more urban MD setting, it was more of a
toss-up for who had the best service. Nextel just simply doesn't work here.
My comments are as valuable as the comments about someone else's exper with
Nextel and Verizon in a store in FL. Even though I don't go shopping in FL,
I still am interested to see what that person's experience was. If you don't
care about my comments on multiple carrier's service in my area, skip to the
next message.

Re: (OT) Nextel
Now Now modernvealotmiko.... just words written nothing attacking, boy
even wrote having good wireless service in home is important. Just
saying as you stated in your home this is whats up... lots of things
could effect service in a place yet not effect service 10' in another
direction. Thats why we have many good service providers to choose from
Vealots Vealots Vealots

Sorry to ruin your preconceptions about me but I am not a Vealot. I
currently think that Verizon serves my needs well. But I left them before a
few years back and went to Cingular (which btw was a BIG mistake). I'd still
be with T-Mobile except it doesn't work here very well. Too bad cause I
loved my phone and my low bill. But for now, VZW does the job (and I do like
the LG VX4400 I just bought a few weeks ago). If I ever move again, who
knows?

Re: (OT) Nextel
I use an after market antenna that slips over the Nextel i95cl phone and
increase Db... When I find bad areas, I keep reporting them, so they fill
the holes. Grant
