Try driving between Chicagoland and New Orleans on major highways, and
you will find PLENTY of Nextel holes...

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
Who was it that said nextel's handsets suck and are expensive
hmmm - looks like verizon using same phones - V60 is just a I60 - you can an
I60 for under $100
but $150-$200 !! - cmon - get a I60 for that - Verizon not selling cheap or
inexpensive handsets. Actually same one.
Who is expensive now?
Can you fear me now
PS unlike a lot of you in refernce to nextel- I wish verizon well on their
PTT - competition is good

Areas on the north shore of Long Island comes to mind.
Areas on Route 84 between the NYS Thruway and the PA border.
Just to name 2 big areas which include a big "road".
Your post sounds like you are doubting me and my experiences by your
sarcastic "road" post. Like it or not, they are my experiences, and
true. The fact that Nextel may not be very far behind Verizon, makes it
just not good enough in certain instances. Do you also think I really
want to own 2 phones? I'd choose Verizon if I could only use 1, but I
need Nextel for my work and if my i90c and coverage was good enough, I'd
give up my Verizon Startac. It's just not, and mentioning coverage on
the NJ Turnpike means nothing. Every carrier has great coverage on the
Turnpike (Interstate 95), after all, it is one of the biggest, busiest
travel highways on the entire East Coast. Look at every carrier's map.
Every main highway is covered. The problem lies OFF the main highways,
and we do certainly go there.

It would be just plain silly to mention a new phone and it's price on
one carrier vs. and older phone on another carrier.
The fact that they look alike has nothing to do with what is inside, and
the features available. You don't really know for sure that it is the
same phone.
This V60p will be cheap in 3 months, maybe even free with a 2 year
contract by Christmas time.

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
I find it interesting that Nextel's nationwide PTT came out just before
Verizon launched their PTT service which is also nationwide. Makes me
wonder if Nextel could have offered nationwide PTT a long time ago and
just didn't. Now we will be able to get some actual user reviews of
Verizon PTT. Not that I am looking to switch from Nextel, but
competition is a good thing!

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
It is possible to merge both into Verizon and Nextel into the same phone.
Motorola gives a code that unlocks the other carrier on the phone. Then
both services would be on one phone. Easier! Larsen Antenna Company makes
very good vehicle antennas... which would not hurt either carrier.

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
Where do you get your facts from?
It depends on where you live what freq. Verizon is on.
In Florida, it is 1900 MHz and if you have actually used the network
here it is not that great. Perhaps you should do some research before
you push your PTT key. All of Florida is a pretty large number of
POP's last time I checked a population of about 15 million give or
take a few million in tourism just in the county where I live each
year.
So what is your definition of 'most'???
I agree that it may be good in NY, NE, DC where they took over the BAM
system, but that doesn't speak for the areas where the crappy PrimeCo
system was.

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
Compare Verizon's PTT coverage with Nextels Coverage... you will compare
apples with apples. This shows Verizon's coverage minus analog and
roaming... Really cuts VZ down to size. I wonder if the providers are
going to play nice and share towers for PTT roaming(awe, pcs, vz). If
not, I wonder if they start denying phone roaming. Could get
interesting.

Yeppers. I drive from Tampa to Nashville frequently and as long as I'm on
an interstate I have signal.
15 miles east of 75 around Adele, Ga, there is no signal. I'm sure there a
lot of areas between interstates without coverage. Hell, there are a lot of
holes in the Tampa area alone.

Verizon and Nextel use two different incompatible radio technologies. I know of
no phones that offer both CDMA and iDEN functionality.

Re: Here comes VERIZON 'direct connect'
Didn't have to use it- just read the white papers put out by Verizon, or
any of the technical reviews done in the last two months. This is
basically a form of packet data transmission, and a very slow one, even
as described by their own technical people.
