Just thinking, er...., typing, out loud.....
Is it technically possible for this to mirror what has happened in the
world of Instant Messaging on the internet?
That is, companies like AOL, MSN etc not allowing cross-platform
communication, so an outside company, such as Trillian, steps up to
offer a cross-platform, software based solution?
Is it even remotly possible that a third party, Java based solution
could be created?
My first thought is that there is way too much proprietary
infrastructure involved, making it impossible due to physical
limitations of the current equipment, and software of any kind residing
on the phone will not be able to overcome such a limiting factor.
Just a rookie with a silly thought,

Re: New Nextel Phones?
The closest thing we have to cross network PTT is called Fastchat
http://www.fastchat.com only on phones with gsm/gprs like Cingular,
Tmobile and ATT. I cant find any reviews on the service, though.

Re: New Nextel Phones?
I was listening to one of the Nextel quarterly conference calls and
they actually do have in their plans for cross-carrier PTT in the near
(5-year or less) future. They are also talking Push-To-View which I
find kind of cool as well, which is scheduled, at this time, for late
2004.
Also, now that Nation-wide PTT has rolled, they are working on
cross-boarder PTT and evenually world-wide PTT.

Re: New Nextel Phones?
I think when number portability comes out everyones rate plans might drop or
they might do something like make nationwide 2way free or somthing. Thats
what I'm hoping, anyone with a $300+ phone could care less about the $200
cancelation fee. Keeping a number that they use for bussiness is more
important and having a better rate plan is too. I like nextel alot, but i
know people that want to switch to T-Mobile for that 1000 min for $39.99 and
use a boost sim for direct connect. It's $1 a day for unlimited 2way on only
on the days you use it so if you use it only on weekends or whatever it's a
good deal. Free nationwide 2way would make me happy $10 a month is a waste
when i'm getting like 1300 daytime with free longdistance already.
