Yes! This was the biggest eye-opener for me...
Nextel remains a great toy for business, so long as its not
critical business. By critical business I mean public saftey, public works,
utilities
and anyone reasonably expected to support those endevors in a disaster.
Not that any wireless carrier is appropriate for critical services mind you,
but
Nextel seems to target those markets...

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?
Manhattan, Grammercy Park: Sitting in a bar with a bunch of other
people Verizon was very reliable, Sprint and AT&T were sporadic and
T-Mobile non-functional. (My CEO dumped his T-Mobile for Verizon this
week because his phone was useless for two days.) My sprint phone
worked on 10-15% of calls through the first night in Manhattan.
Interestingly, it was WORSE on Friday, when I got zero calls through.
I also got no incoming calls for two days.

I read that it functioned pretty well in New York City, but in Connecticut,
forget it! A call to Nextel customer service revealed a 'devil may care'
attitude along the lines of admitting they have no reason to put UPSes and
generators at all of their cell sites.
I wrote a strong letter to Nextel's CEO, Tim Donahue, that following Monday.
A senator proposed legislation holding cellular companies responsible to
make their networks function in emergency situations. Many people have
dropped their land lines in favor of cellular, and those folks are finding
themselves without a phone more often than they should have to. That's not
to say that SBC SNET was any better... landlines were all dead too, until
Friday afternoon.
