    south-western connecticut...

I have cingular GSM and you could definitely tell that the system easily
became overloaded. I was not able to make a call out for quite awhile
although my luck at receiving calls was much higher. Couple people on
Tmobile called me - spose they didnt have as much trouble as i was having.

After about 4 or 5 hours the signal disappeared totally for any GSM network,
clearly their backup systems failed. As i drove home i passed through areas
that had coverage and others that were down. Gotta get generators!

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?

ATTWS: Phone was able to detect a signal for several hours here in
Queens NY, but got the "system busy" tone and would try to re-dial.
By mid-evening, I got the "no service" display in the same location,
so I'm guessing that the cell in my area had some sort of back-up
emergency power that lasted a few hours before going completely dark,
or that ATTWS shut stuff down to protect their equipment/conserve
power during the restart. In any case, no call I tried to make to
anyone in the affected area or outside went through.

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?

Didn't hear of any providers that worked except for Verizon. I have a
T-mobile phone and couldn't even connect a call until Late Friday
night (Downtown). Tmobile service in NYC has gone down considerably. I
will be switching to Verizon (unfortunately), but having a phone that
works in times like this is more important than any
    gadget/feature/mobility. Sorry T-mobile PEACE

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?

I was at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. If Northwest had gotten my flight
out on time, I would have been on my way to Phoenix. I had both Sprint
(personal) and Verizon (work) phones. Both weren't that great. I did
actually have a little better luck getting a connection with Sprint. It
took a couple attempts, but I at least was able to get a call through.
Verizon had maybe 1 out of 5 connection rate, with one major drop while
trying to talking to corporate travel. At least Sprint didn't drop once
connected. Then again, with some 3-4,000 people in a small area and
probably half of them trying to call out, not a big surprise overall.

Verizon and Cingular were both reliable as was AT&T (roaming from Cingular)
in the Golden Triangle that didn't lose power
    (Brighton/Howell/Pinckney--Livingston Co.)

    > How was your carrier during the blackout?

    Verizon Wireless in Downtown Manhattan:

Service started off being ok. After the first few hours, I still had my
usual strong digital signal but had difficulty placing and receiving
calls. If I tried calling my cell phone from a landline, not only did
the cell phone not ring, I often didn't get forwarded to my voicemail
either. Other people were able to leave some voicemails, but the VM
indicator didn't show up until at least a day later. I tried switching
to analog, and got a weak signal that was unusable for making calls (but
this is typical of my experience trying to use analog in this area, even
    on a normal day).

On Friday morning, with power restored to much of Downtown, the digital
signal indicator was 0 or 1 bars (i.e., much worse than Thursday night).
Still couldn't place or receive calls. I gave up and turned the phone
off, so I don't know if it got better during the day. By Saturday,
    everything was fine.

Several people I know elsewhere in Manhattan have Sprint PCS. Thursday
evening, it took me over an hour to get through to them, calling
repeatedly from my landline. Once connected, they were experiencing a
higher than usual rate of dropped calls. So they weren't doing too well
    either.
