I think the answer is what sounds good and how much memory does your phone
have available, but I'm asking just to see if anyone has found settings that
are close to ideal every time.

Right now I resize in an effort to keep my file size under 100K. I just made
a ringtone out of "Roses" and used 15 seconds of the song. I started at 233K
and quit at 87K. My final settings were 22050 Hz, 48 Kbps (bitrate), and
sample rate 44100 Hz. I don't usually edit midis because even good ones can
be as small as 4K and sound great.

If you make your own ringtones what program do you like to use to get the
job done?
