difference between the voice quality of "1x" phone to the voice quality of older CDMA phon

Is there really a (substantial) difference between the voice quality of "1x"
phone to the voice quality of older CDMA phone.

Is it better or worse? Also if worse is there a tweak to force it into a
different voice codec?
