blocking (or pseudo-blocking) private calls to a nokia 3650 (at&t)

okay, i understand that there is no supported way of preventing
caller-id-less numbers from calling my phone. i've heard people
talking about doing things like setting a silent ring tone for such
calls, but i haven't been able to figure out how to do this on my
nokia 3650.

seems like i'd have to make a phonebook entry for the "private"
caller, know what phone number to enter for the numberless caller, and
then set the ringtone for that number. none of which seems feasible.

yes, i could set the real ringtone for everyone in my phonebook and
set the null ringtone for the default, but obviously that's a pain in
the ass.

any suggestions? thanks.

Put everyone in caller groups.

Set your "Silent" profile to ring for "All calls"

Set the other profiles to ring for certain groups, but not "All calls".

Everyone who is not in a group rings as Silent.

That's about the only way to do it.

How does one change the default ringtone on the 3650?

I've been using BLACKLIST
.. . . http://snipurl.com/45eq
.. . . or, do a search at Handango > Mobile Phones > Nokia 3650 >
Symbian OS. Be sure to grab the documentation from
.. . . http://snipurl.com/45eo
Fully featured trial available from Handango. $9.95 to register.

In essence, you get two configurable items-- one = "blacklist", the
other = "accept only list". You set up "rules", each containing one or
more contacts/groups. I set up a rule under blacklist, using the
preinstalled "Unknown"-- kills anything without the caller ID showing.
I also created a new contact, with last name Number, and first name
Wrong. As misdialed numbers come n, I add the number to contact Wrong
Number. "Person" Wrong Number is combined with "Unknown" in my
"blacklist" rule. Through that rule, when such a call comes in, the
3650 does not ring, and the caller always gets a busy signal. A log
keeps track of all such blocked callers, plus the front screen of the
app gives me the number of blocked calls to date, until I clear the
log.

Special note, i.e., "Learned the Hard Way">> Be SURE to distinguish
between name and numbers when dealing with the accept only list. I
added a number, but the contact had several. When he called from a
non-default number, his call was blocked. Therefore, for the accept
only list, where your contact has multiple numbers listed, add
"person", NOT "number". That way, so long as the contact is dialing
from any of the numbers you've listed in the associated contact card,
that person will get through to you. But be aware-- this can be tricky
where folks are calling from work, which typically includes access to
multiple consecutive numbers, i.e., 215-555-1200, 215-555-1201,
215-555-1202, etc. (To my knowledge, there's no wildcard feature to be
tapped here.)

Great app nonetheless! Light footprint! :-)
