Where are you ? If you're in Europe then a 3310 would fit the bill
perfectly. Basic, no gimmicks, good battery life, and very tried and
trusted (it's been around for at least 4 years now, and still in
    production)

    Stateside ? Then something like a Nokia 5165 or 1260 basic TDMA-AMPS
    handset should be OK.

A 3310 is prone to problems after you drop it. A 5110 (GSM 900 only) or 5130
(PCN 1800 only) is much more reliable (for rough use), and has much longer
battery life. Also the antenna stub gives better coverage. If you never use
it (always on standby) it lasts about 10-11.5 days (I only need to charge it
    2-3 times in a month..hehe)

    So is an egg,
but you don't stop people buying them because of it

    I have a 3310,
it has been dropped, kicked & vibrated itself off the mantle many times,
    and it's still going strong

Must be one of them rubber eggs?

Nokia 6150 (900/1800 GSM) if in EU. Only downside is battery life but
otherwise an unbeatable simple phone. I keep one in my car glovebox as an
    emergency phone.
