    Is there a FAQ on how to interpret the model numbers on Nokia phones?

    I'm assuming that the models within each of 1xxx, 2xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx,
    6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx, and 9xxx series are related in design and functions.
    But then how to you interpret the next 3 model numbers? Do they have
    some sort of specific coding to mean something? For example, by looking
    at the model numbers 6220 and 6230, can you assume that 6230 is a newer
    model of 6220? Or that model 6820 is a better phone than model 6100
    because it has a "higher" model number?

    Nokia numbering wents tits up a year or 3 ago..
    at one time you you could tell by the model num what type of person the
    phone was aimed at, but recently that has seemed to gone outa the window...

    There is no logic to Nokia model numbers - at all from what I can fathom.
    Equating your example to reality, is a 3210 better than a 3100?? Umm nope!
    So I wouldn't assume anything. I tend to only rely on the first digit and
    even then one has to view each model for what it can offer you.

    I believe they still have some logic, but what makes difficult to see is
    that Nokia has changed their numbering logic quite often. As fas as I know,
    they aren't ever going to fully reveal it because of competitors.

    Sometime ago a Nokia executive told a Finnish journalist that their
    numbering would go like this:

    1:st number: Style (e.g 2=Basic, 3=Expression, 5=Active, 6=Classic Business,
    7=Fashion, 8=Premium)
    2:nd number: Functionality (e.g 2=Camera, 3=Music)
    3:rd number: Network (e.g 0=GSM/GPRS, 2=GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 5=GSM/WCDMA)
    4:th number: Generation

    With this logic for example the 6230 would be a classic business phone with
    a camera and GSM/GPRS/EDGE network support, or the 3200 an expression style
    camera phone, or the 3300 an expression style music phone for GSM/GPRS
    networks and so on.

    But not all the models fit to this numbering logic, especially the older
    ones.

    As far as I've understood, there isn't a categeory starting with number
    four, because it stands for DEATH or misfortune in many Asian countries.

    This not uncommon in the world, for example many airplanes don't have row 13
    or some hotels don't have floor 13, because number thirteen stands for bad
    luck in Western countries.

    sounds about right. psion didn't do a series 4 because Four is an
    unlucky number in China, where they expect high sales.

    Neither do new ones such as the 3600/20/50 Where the main differences are
    GSM bands and keyboard layout and the 3590/5 where the main difference is
    the addition of a color screen

    The third number used to relate to network type ie,
    1= gsm 900/1800 eg. 3510
    2= tdma 800 eg. 5120
    4= GAIT: gsm 800/1900 tdma 800/1900 eg. 6340
    6= tdma 800/1900 eg. 6160
    7= cdma 1900 eg. 2270
    8= cdma 800/1900 eg 3285
    9=gsm 800/1900 eg. 3590

    It seems that their old numbering scheme went out the window with the
    addition of GSM850 in North America.

    So what about the phones with an i on the end, e.g. 3510i???
