Hello,
Can anyone tell me if there are any reasonably priced cell phones on the
market that support multiple phone lines? I've recently developed a need to
have a separate phone number for my work and for personal use. I really
want to avoid carrying two phones if at all possible.
I currently have service with T-Mobile.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris Hackett

Yep.
Start at a Nokia 5110 and work your way up from there.
Every Nokia since has the capability for 2 phone lines.
You need to talk to your SP though.

Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to know if that's documented in the
user guide? My provider seemed like an obvious place to start looking for
this information. So I called T-Mobile and asked. I even called two
different locations, and both of them were pretty clueless about my request.
They both insisted that they didn't carry any such phone.
Anyway, thanks again for the info. I'll go look at the User Guides for the
phones you mention!

I think most Nokia's (and probably others) support two phone
numbers for cases where you have one account up north and
a different account in (say) Florida during the winter. There's
not much demand for that these days with all the national plans.
But I think you have to choose one account or the other. I've
never heard of a phone that could be active on two lines at the
same time so that either one could ring in. Has anyone else?

Yes, it's very popular here in the UK on the Orange network (the only UK
network to support it). Many people, myself included, have one line for
business and another for personal calls, both on the same phone. They both
have their own voicemail so it is possible say to divert the business
number to voicemail (or another number) while leaving the personal number
to ring normally. The calls also appear separately on the itemised bill.
It is a *network* service, not specifically a phone service, although the
phone does have to support it. All current Nokias do, I can't speak for
any other makes.

Hmm, where did you get this information..? I am not aware of any network
other than Orange in the UK supporting Line 2.

Since when? Care to quote a source for this?
AFAIK, only Orange support a Line 2 function in the UK, and only Vodafone
support multi-SIM (or whatever they call it) where you can have your number
on two SIM's at the same time.

No..there's no phone with 2 sim card holders that can be used simultaneously
AFAIK....what he meant was a service called ALS (alternate line service).
(similar to OL2 - orange line 2).

Actually, thinking about it, there is - the Nokia 6090 fixed carphone has
dual SIM card capability. The "main" SIM is located in the transceiver
unit fixed in the vehicle and there is another SIM holder in the handset.
The idea is that fleet owners such as haulage firms can allow the driver
to insert their own SIM in the handset for private calls and the main SIM
is then reserved for business calls. Whether incoming calls can be
received on both simultaneously I have no idea as I have never used one
and the literature I have doesn't make it clear.
