Hi! I have to do a short presentation about several phones. It looks
like Nokia would be better according to some reviews I found on web,
but I wanted to ask anyway.

Brighthand reviewed the new Nokia 9500, which ships in late 2004. How
does this stack up with the Motorola mpx220 (which ships this June)?
According to Brighthand, "When I checked out Motorola's MPx this week,
it was definitely in prototype stage, and very unstable. Nokia's 9500,
on the other hand, was rock solid. There were no problems with any of
the applications when I was using it. I'm not sure why this model
won't be available for months; it seems ready to go now."

Also, The Nokia 9500 runs Symbian and runs J2ME apps, while I'm not
sure whether the Motorola can do this. Anyone know? Our office uses
Blackberry RIMs which run J2ME and any new phones should also be able
to do this because our mobile clients are J2ME.

They're more like quick previews, because we're talking about prototypes
that people have tried just for a moment.

You're writing about Motorola Mpx220, but the preview you referred concerns
the Motorola Mpx. So I assume we're talking about the Motorola Mpx Pocket PC
    Phone Editon model:

    http://www.motorola.com/mot/doc/1/1052_MotDoc.pdf

I haven't had chance to try the Mpx, but I have test run the Nokia 9500
Communicator and it felt quite promising in terms of the UI, QWERTY
keyboard, email, calendar and other PIM features, build in EGPRS/GPRS and
WLAN access, and so on. The QWERTY keyboard is a little smaller than in the
Nokia 92xx series ( see the both ones in a live image:
http://lehto.net/temp/9500vs92xx.jpg ), but I still think it has very good
    feel.

One big advantage of the 9500 Communicator is the Opera browser which is far
better in small screen rendering than Pocket IE used in MS Windows Mobile
    devices.

The 9500 supports J2ME, and to be more specific Java MIDP 2.0 applications.
I'll be very surprised if the Motorola Mpx, based on Windows Mobile and
Pocket PC platform, will have any Java support. As you probably know,
Microsoft isn't very keen on supporting Java if they don't necessarily have
    to.

It's a bit unfortunate that the 9500 Communicator is not shipping until
Q4/2004. Then again Motorola has a long history of being quite over
optimistic about shipping dates. I wouldn't be too sure about the June 2004
    estimate.

I still prefer the keyboard of the 9500 over the motorola in comparison. The
moto's one looks horrible...and functionality is impaired IMO

Have you tried them both? I haven't tried the Mpx, so I can only so I'm
interested in getting my hands on it.

The keyboard does indeed look very small:

    http://msmobiles.com/news.php/2386.html

But then again the device itself is smaller than the Nokia 9500.

For me the Nokia 6820 has proved that even a small QWERTY keyboard can be
    very good for quick messaging.

both the motorola mpx and the nokia 9500 have support for MIDP
(definitely the new MIDP 2 for nokia, probably MIDP 2 for motorola).
the demand for midp in mobile devices by carriers means all the
    vendors will have MIDP.

however, in addition to MIDP - which is targeted for mass-market
cellphones and pagers, the nokia 9500 has the very new Personal
Profile of J2ME ("Xlets"), which is targeted for high end PDAS and
smartphones. this new profile of J2ME is the direct competitor of
other high end development platforms and the nokia 9500 will be the
first mass market phone to display it.
