If I take my Nokia 8310 to a Nokia service centre in the UK so they can
update the firmware the will I lose my user settings (profiles, logos,
ringtones, phone book, etc)?
How would it cost to have the firmware upgraded privately?

Yes, it will completly wipe the phone as if it was new, becoming a problem
again now that more and more people store sms and phone numbers on their
phone I suppose for capacity reasons.
You need to back up your numbers (on a piece of paper or a sim card?) logos
and all the other 'rubbish' well....hmm

Yes, unfortunately you'll lose it all so back it up before having any work
done.

Anywhere between £10-£15.

As others have mentioned, you'll lose everything not stored on the SIM card.
If it works perectly ok, why bother having the firmware upgraded?

Perhaps to be able to use some facility not provided by the old
firmware..? You don't always wait until something goes wrong before
upgrading PC software, do you..?

Quite. However sometimes it's useful to upgrade. Then again, sometimes it
isn't..!

The 8310 at one point in its firmware history had a MAJOR bug that would
quite regularly reboot the phone when trying to send an sms, loosing the sms
you had just typed. a firmware fix fixed that .. worth doing for that,
regardless of what else may or may not be wrong ..
bug fixes are bug fixes .. it might not affect you now, but why wait till it
does to update it?

If under waruntee, it is free. Otherwise, I believe there is a small fee
charged (will vary from country to country)
Use nokia's website to find your local one, and call em!

Just in case you were wondering, upgrading the firmware privately will also
erase the contents of the phone ..
