THE first ever computer virus that can infect mobile phones has been
discovered, anti-virus software developers said today, adding that up until
now it has had no harmful effect.

The French unit of the Russian security software developer Kaspersky Labs
said that that virus - called Cabir - appears to have been developed by an
international group specialising in creating viruses which try to show "that
no technology is reliable and safe from their attacks".

Cabir infects the Symbian operating system that is used in several makes of
mobiles, notably the Nokia brand, and propagates through the new bluetooth
wireless technology that is in several new mobile phones.

If the virus succeeds in penetrating the phone, it writes the inscription
'Caribe' on the screen and is then activated every time that the phone is
    turned on.

So you don't have a symbian driven WAP/GPRS/GSM phone which enables you to
browse the web & download Java applets then....

It is perfectly possible for a Symbian phone to have a virus directed at it,
it's just another case for practising safe hex.

You seem to forget such phones a basically lowish powered dedicated
    computers.

Mind you my 3650 has more computing power than my old & trusty PS2 which
had 640k memory & 2 720 floppy drives, with a green screen as well, those
were the days, didn't have any viruses then, just bad floppy disks...

You seem to be living in the past. Today's smartphones have open platforms
for native and Java applications. Try Google with open+mobile+platforms.

The same fools which unquestioningly accept any ActiveX downloads which
may be offered for Internet Explorer.

Oh yeh they did ... falling-letters, "Your computer is now stoned,
legalize cannabis", little ambulances going across the screen, and other
    golden-oldie DOS viruses.

I liked the old washing machine virus that I got an an old 8088, especially
the spin cycle that thrashed the floppy drive for 20 minutes.

No they didn't as there was no where for them to be stored & run from, in
those days you didn't have any permanent storage on the PC, it was all run
from floppies, (those were the days)

Mind you some machines did have those clunky old 5meg and 10meg Rodime,
    Miniscribe, etc, 5.25 in drives.

And those viruses where usually found on floppies which contained
pirated software, especially prevalent on college and university campusses.

That's not so easy as many/most commercial websites don't work if you
    disable active-x

Just install JavaCool's SpywareBlaster - has a list of banned ActiveX
and stops IE from installing them

I've never had any problems and my browser don't even have ActiveX.
    www.opera.com.

Sure you're not getting ActiveX mixed up with JavaScript ?
