Nokia 5210 will not switch on unless the charger is plugged in, but once on
it seems to work fine. Battery appears to charge fully and runs the phone
OK. Have taken apart phone and cleaned all the contacts I could see with
    meths, but no change.

This has happened since it went through he washing machine for the third
time (a careless son). Probably the cause. Any thoughts gratefully received
on what else I might try (on the phone not my son)?

Battery konked? Using datacable, enable netmonitor and look at menu 23, last
row (there will be two numbers there, for Current mAh and target, if u press
    * and hold for the description). If these values are below 350, consider
throwing the battery away. Below 200 even after a full 10 hrs charge, bin
    it.

Could be power switch's contacts (for its main on off operation, not the
contacts attached to it and mainboard) corrupted, hence the need for a
"boost" from the charger to wake it up a but

Solved it. More scrubbing the pcb with meths and fine toothbrush did it.
