If your employer provides you with a crummy Nokia 6340i which is a non colour
crummy phone and you want to buy a Nokia GSM colour phone, can you simply move
the SIM card to the new phone and use it instead of the crummy phone? It is my
understanding that the SIM card is the brains of the phone and so if you move
it, it should work but I don't know if it will physically fit.

You can if the new phone is not locked to a specific network.

It will work but have you considered that the 6340i has analog reception as
a backup in case there is no GSM signal where you travel? Maybe your
employer gave you that phone for a reason :-)

Otherwise, of course, I would not understand why anyone would hand
out a phone usable merely for <gasp> phoning. The crazy thing is
that phoning and things like the addressbook are just not being
consciously developed, usability is somewhere around 1930ies, but
the latest and newest in multimedia is a must. Grow up, society. You
are being raped by the telcos. Nobody needs MMS, nobody needs
cameras in cellphones, nobody needs games, and nobody needs Internet
at a fortune-per-minute. Yet they managed to convince everyone, and
noone understood that s/he is being screwed.

It is a crummy phone. It shuts off for no reason, the phone book is hard to
read in the sunlight and the reception sucks. The Nokia 35XX phones, which I
have as my personal phone does not have these problems. And they have Colour
screens too. So if I were to buy the GSM version of that phone off Ebay or
something, I just want to move the SIM card to it (assuming it is a Cingular
phone as well).

Phone hard to use in sunlight? I don't see how a mono can be worse than a
colour screen... A colour screen SERIOUSLY SUCKS in sunlight

Re: Can you move a SIM card?
If your personal phone is also GSM you may like to consider a dual SIM card
holder. They either come in a rear panel for your phone with a switch to
select which SIM to use or fit internally and turn the phone off and back on
to switch SIMs.
You can find them on eBay for many types of phones, it saves you carrying
two phones but the only drawback is you can only use one SIM at a time.

I been carrying 2 phones plus a pager forever so that doesn't bother me. I just
want to change one of them to be more like the other.
