    Hi,

I need to open up my (oldish) Nokia phone charger to repair a broken lead.
Problem is it seems to have some unusual screws holding it together. Rather
than 'flat blade' or philips/posidrive etc, they require a 3-pointed
screwdriver blade, (like a triangle or 3 pointed star). Well I guess if
you're able to answer my question, you know what they look like...

Question is: Where can I get hold of a screwdrive that fits, (or at least
does this type of screw have a name, so I can search Google for one).

    Cheers,

    ChrisM.

It sounds like the same type as the internal screws used on the Nokia
phones themselves. If so, then they're called "torx" screwdrivers. I
was able to get a set at my local car accessory shop, but I've seen
    them available at Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/).

No they're not Torx - they're three pointed whereas Torx are 6 pointed. In
any case I reckon it's probably as cheap to buy a new charger..! I have a
spare ACP-12X if it's any use to you, but this may not work with older
phones, which phone is it you want to use it with..?

Tri-wing. Machine Mart have sets of security bits including those. I found
out after I paid to have the airbag on my Granada sorted. The only reason I
couldn't do it myself was those bits. :-)

    Thanks for your answers.
Looking at the price of tri-wing screwdrivers (£3-4) against a new charger
    (<£10).
Probably really not worth the bother. UN less anyone can suggest anywhere I
can buy a tri-wing for less than a couple of quid (including delivery)

    Cheers,

    Thanks for your advise,
Its actually a new phone (6230) just the charger (my spare) that is quite
    old.
How much do you want for your spare and where abouts do you live? (I'm in
the UK slightly north of London)

    Cheers,

    ChrisM

The 6230 should be compatible with the ACP-12X, I'd hazard a guess that's
what you have already, can you confirm..?

If you want this one, email me at ivor at despammed dot com (fill in the
dots yourself..!). It's a genuine Nokia one, not a clone, never used. It
came with a spare 6310i that I bought, as I already have about three or
four of them I don't really need this one, so it's yours if you want it.

Thanks Ivor,. I have got one last hope, but if that doesn't pan out, I might
take you up on your generous offer. How much would the postage cost you?

    Cheers!

Don't suppose it'd be a lot, say a couple of quid..? Let me know.

    Hi Chris,

Try a company called Screwfix Direct (They are on the net) and do a set of
*Security bits* I guess you've seen the Allen Key type with a centre pin to
    stop people taking them out?

They sell the whole set including the tri-point for removing the screws you
    speak of :-)

    Alf.

It's a #00 Tri-Wing. You'll find lots of screwdrivers on eBay, one size too
    big (#0), for opening GameBoys.

I've managed to undo those type of screws before using a small but
well-fitting flat head screwdriver. It can be done but there's obviously a
high risk of rounding the screw head. If you're otherwise going to throw the
charger away it could be worth a go.

Isn't the internet a wonderful thing...

Yesterday, I had a broken charger with some weird screws that I had no idea
what they were called or where to buy a suitable screwdriver. So I posted
the question on this NG. Today, less than 24 hours later, not only have I
found out exactly what I need, but I have had a suggestion of where to buy
one. Gone to that site, ordered it, had it delivered, taken the back of my
faulty charger and confirmed I can fix it. This evening after work, I can
spend 10 minutes re-fitting the lead and my charger will be working again.
No more than 36 hours after first asking the question.

    Thanks Guys!

    Cheers,

    ChrisM
